lost souls

I met a young girl of no more than five
crying so hard, "what happened you poor little thing?"
She sobbed how she had lost her joy
How can THAT be with one so young
in this land of everything?
Seems she had lost her doll, her favorite toy.

Child, I explained
There are children in this world that do without
who would be joyful just to have your shoes
Your doll has shoes, but they do not.

I met a teenage girl, a senior cutting class
"Why do you abandon your school?"
She lost her joy when she lost her dad
she skips her lessons to try and be cool

Girl, allow me to explain
there are people that do not know their mom OR dad
and they would be grateful to go to school
they could find joy in half the things you have had

I met a young woman, 25ish or so
weeping wildly how she had lost her joy
The pros at the ER were not supposed to tell her
That the child she lost was a boy.

I had nothing for that
No peace or comfort or words of light
the pain of a lost child must be universal
so I just shut up and held her all night.

i love you my sister
fuck 'em if they can't take a joke

"what a long, strange trip it's been"
