Palestine From Different Eyes
It is really difficult to watch footage of a Palestinian child throwing a stone at an Israeli tank and still be able to accept the Israeli (Zionist) narrative. It is images like these seeped through the controlled media that have finally convinced western societies to join the rest of the world in supporting the Palestinians’ right to a homeland.
Unfortunately, however, the average western viewer’s support for the Palestinian cause comes mostly out of pity for the underdog, not out of regard to historical and political facts. Their logic stems from a sentimental rhetoric: aren’t Palestinians people? Don’t they also deserve a home?
This “human” question has become the common denominator among all factions of the pro-Palestine camp; the very minimum that organizational leaders have been fighting so hard to validate in the face of the Zionist-controlled media. This flow of images and footage since the second Intifada, Sept 2000, has now become seen as a crucial element in shifting the Palestine-Israel discourse slightly towards the Palestinian cause; a victory for the pro-Palestine camp, and a defeat to Zionist-controlled media. The elite-based pro-Israel camp, of course, countered this new media shift by incessantly replacing the image of the boy and tank, with the image of the Palestinian “terrorist,” an image so familiar I don’t need to link you to it. Since then, it’s been a media tug of war, where the pro-Palestine camp is pointing at Palestinian children and Israeli tanks, while the pro-Israel camp is demanding to remember why the tank was there in the first place; not for that little boy, but for his masked daddy with the AK-47 and the “Death to Israel” banner.
And how did the pro-Palestine camp react to this Israeli response, that it is Palestinian terrorism that is perpetuating this conflict? By ignoring it, and occasionally agreeing with it then ignoring it, to go back to their politically-correct common denominator: “Let’s not look at the conflict with only one eye… seeing Israeli suffering but ignoring Palestinian suffering.”
This continuous attempt on behalf of the pro-Palestine camp to equate the Palestinian to the Israeli in humanity (as though the Palestinian humanity was in question) is exactly what got it to shoot itself in the foot. If an Israeli gets to have a homeland, then so should a Palestinian (the pro-Palestine camp argues). If an Israeli suffers, so does a Palestinian. Therefore, it is only logical to claim that if an Israeli is guilty of mass murder, then so is a Palestinian, and the variation between the damage inflicted is related to the variation in armament, i.e. were the Palestinians to have an army like Israel, the Palestinians would have killed just as many Israelis, if not more! By putting the question of ‘humanity’ upfront, disregarding the historical context of the struggle, the pro-Palestine camp found itself obligated to concur that Palestinian “terrorism” is a tiny, yet real, obstacle to peace, and thus an obstacle to achieving equality in rights, such as the right to a homeland.
And what about this masked terrorist dad? Wasn’t he a kid not too long ago? Hasn’t he been arrested by the so-called Israeli Defense Forces and detained for several years with no charge or trial? Hasn’t he been tortured in Israeli dungeons, slapped on the face repeatedly, urinated on, kicked in the stomach, and had glass coke bottles jammed up his anus? Hasn’t he picked up the body parts of his brother after an Israeli shell tore him asunder? Has he not waited in a tent for the return of his father before him, who had been arrested and tortured like the others? And now that he has the balls to stand up and fight, to hold a rifle, to hold onto whatever olive trees are left in his village, these well-fed pro-Palestine spokespersons in the west have the audacity to tacitly nod in understanding whenever the pro-Israel camp accuses him of terrorism?
Aside from utter shame, it is a strategic error to sweep Palestinian “terrorism” under the carpet; to ignore Israeli accusations of anti-semitism and terrorism, because by doing so, not only are they justifying Israel’s right to exist, but also Israel’s right to roll tanks into Gaza and Jenin! Afterall, since they already agreed that Palestinian terrorism is a problem, regardless of how small it is, their issue with Israel became about “excessive use of force,” as though there was a legitimate amount of force that was acceptable! It’s as though the pro-Palestine camp is saying: “if Israeli commandos could somehow manage to kill only Palestinian terrorists, and miraculously leave all non-terrorist Palestinians unharmed, that would be totally fine.”
This strategic error leads the average westerner to think that “both sides are equally wrong and violent (the Palestinian violence is smaller due to lack of ability, not will or desire),” completely ignoring historical facts, such as the fact that Israel is a racist state by design (for Jews only), created by European powers, based on a Biblical fairytale, settled with European Jewish illegal immigrants, on a land that rightfully belongs to another pluralistic, ancient society that have existed for thousands of years; and included indigenous Jews, the Palestinian Jews, who have lived with their Christian and Muslim Arab, Druze, Armenian, and Kurdish populations for centuries in harmony.
The pro-Palestine representatives need to answer some very serious questions. Do they honestly believe that if Palestinian “terrorism” stops, for good, that Israel is going to allow the Palestinians to build their own state? Do they honestly believe that the reason why Israelis have, so far, refused to let the Palestinian state exist is due to the lack of trust (that the Israelis have nightmares of Arabs pushing them into the sea)? And most importantly, do they seriously base their definition of what constitutes “Occupied Territories” on a war that lasted for six days, which somehow miraculously made all land occupied before that date no longer illegally occupied?
