Wrestling Entertainment announced today that it is suing Connecticut's Secretary of State after it ruled that any Connecticut voters who showed up to vote for Linda McMahon's Senate campaign wearing WWE merchandise would be turned away.
The announcement, which includes a statement from WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, reads as follows:

STAMFORD, Conn., October 26, 2010 – "On behalf of myself, my company, WWE® fans and any Connecticut citizen who wants to exercise their constitutional right to vote, I have filed a lawsuit today asserting that Susan Bysiewicz's directive that allows poll workers to refuse registered voters wearing WWE merchandise the right to vote is a flagrant act of censorship and discrimination," said Vince McMahon, Chairman and CEO, World Wrestling Entertainment.

  • WWE MAKES CT SECRETARY OF STATE BACK DOWN

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STAMFORD, Conn., October 26, 2010 – “The moment Connecticut Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz issued an un-American, unconstitutional and discriminatory directive prohibiting voters from wearing WWE® merchandise at the polls, Attorney General Richard Blumenthal should have immediately stepped in to enforce the law.

As a result of the Attorney General’s inaction, I brought suit to enforce these basic, fundamental constitutional rights. Within hours of filing the lawsuit, Blumenthal recused himself, and Bysiewicz reversed her position and immediately notified all Local Registrar of Voters and Town Clerks via email.

I am pleased that Connecticut voters have had their freedom of expression and their right to vote restored,” said Vince McMahon, Chairman and CEO, World Wrestling Entertainment®.

What was the point in trying to ban the shirts? As god awful ugly as they are...
She might have got more votes if she tried to ban Ed Hardy shirts instead! Now THAT'S a law I'd like to see passed...

  • Let's be honest. Anyone voting for her because they like wrestling, and want to support WWE is an idiot and needs to rethink their priorities. People need to take a serious look at how her business treats their employees and competitors. How many more lives have to be lost or destroyed before there are serious questions raised. Imagine the same stories coming out of the four major sports, and the reactions they would cause.

  • yes, but the difference is the 4 major sports have MULTIPLE owners, not ONE. Sure, he's a billionaire, but can you imagine the sheer cost to one man with all of the injuries sustained, the health costs/lost revenue incurred to him? People don't turn off or not go to a baseball game because their favourite player is out. People DO turn off the tv and stop going to events because Triple H/Undertaker/Shawn Michaels is out. Most of these guys get paid hansomly for what they do. They can afford their own expenses. It all comes down to the fact that they are pressured (either by management or by themselves as they don't want to lose standing) to perform while injured.

Ethically, he's an ass. But as a business man, he's doing what's right for his business, just as any other circus owner would do. ;)

  • keep in mind, Kurt Angle, one of the WWE's top stars at the time, got released because he refused to get help for a painkiller addiction. So Vince isn't ALL evil.

If I ever get citizenship, I think I'll dress as the Ultimate Warrior when I vote.

(yeah, it's been a while since I watched wrestling)
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.
  • or, Vince maybe saw Angle turning a bit too Benoit for his liking and didn't want the fallout.
