godsmack - rip off or homage??

When I first heard Godsmack/Godsmack it sounded so much like AIC that i called it an homage to Layne & co.
I thought they would find their own sound and they kind of did.
When i first heart the new GS song love, death, sex, pain (or something like it) i thought it was new AIC.
so my conclusion: rip off
fuck 'em if they can't take a joke

I see where you're coming from, but what if they're just insanely inspired by them??

Then they should call themselves an AIC tribute band
    i loved the first album
but almost every syllable out of sully's mouth sounded like layne, as does this new song.

You make a good point, but myself personally I've never viewed them as a rip-off, just a band who isn't as rich, but obviously inspired by AIC whom I love very much.

I don't think they hold a candle to AIC though, but I don't mind Godsmack for what they're worth.

I was in the store the other day and saw that Sully has a solo record out? :? Wonder what that's like....

although their intentions may be good, and i don't look at them the way that i look at nickleback, creed, etc.. i think godsmack is a generic, more nu metal/radio friendly version of the alice in chains type of music. i wouldn't call them a rip off, but i don't find them to be very good.

I have heard AIC in other bands such as Korn. GS is OK for what they're worth, as you wrote.
(I'm wondering if there were SO MANY "oh yeah"s in "Save my Brain" as a throwback on GS.)

  • Godsmack started as an AIC tribute band.
God Smack is a title of an AIC song (although the band denies the link).
Faceless is the title of a Godsmack album. Facelift is the title of an AIC album.
The GS sun logo is nearly identical to that of AIC.
Sully has been quoted as saying Layne is the single person who got him into singing.
Both of their first records sound more metal, both of their second records have more of a "sludgy" sound.
Both bands have done acoustic EP's (and I love all three).

I call RIPOFF. Sully has stepped on every stone that Layne and Co has laid down.

When you lay it out that way, I may jsut have to reconsider my opinion.

  • It pissed me off when I saw some interview with them where they tried to claim they're not named after the AIC song. It's like, come on man. I somewhat like one Godsmack song, "Touche". That's about it though, not big on their other stuff.

This whole thing kind of pissed me off 10 years ago or so when they first came out.

    Now not so much.
    I don't like them.
They like what they do and make a living for it.

Both, and also "not very good"
  • The band's name, according to Merrill in the Smack This! DVD, was taken from the Alice in Chains' song "God Smack". However, Erna stated in a 1999 interview that "I was making fun of somebody who had a cold sore on his lip and the next day I had one myself and somebody said, It looks like God just smacked you in the face for making fun. The name stuck and they went by Godsmack from then on. We were aware of the Alice in Chains song but didn't really think much about it. It's a cool song and the name had meaning for us".

we were "AWARE" of the AIC song? Um, your band used to be an AIC COVER BAND!!! God Smack was released in 1992. Godsmack formed their band and took their name in 1995.

Sounds like Sully is lying to me.
