    I agree. It is outrageous.

Though it just goes to show how much value people place in footballers these days. Many people in England seem incapable of talking about anything else. It's the current #1 opiate of the masses.

Though I do love sitting down the pub on a Sunday afternoon drinking beer and watching the footie.
  • blame the arabs at man city for putting the wages into a new leauge , moneys not a object so the other top clubs have to be able to compete to keep the top players . but when it comes down to it if somebody offered you silly money for something you were really good at would you turn it down ?

Chelsea and Abromovich got there first. Though it could be argued it's been heading this way for years.

That is sort of why I have never had a problem with athlete salaries. I mean if a player is making that much, how much are his bosses making. And if the player is the one putting people in the seats, then why shouldn't he be able to ask for more?
  • i am not a man utd fan by any stretch of the imagination , but i think this is a case of the player being (thinking ) he is bigger than the club , this should just not happen he should just have been sold . like the banner at old trafford at there last home game said " who's the whore now then wayne "

He's a pauper compared to New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez - he makes $2.29 million per week, which comes to roughly £1.45 million. Every seven days. Four of the six highest-paid athletes in the world play for the Yankees. It's freaking insane.
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

    some more valuable than others.

i still think if NY had no sports teams...when they tried to pass bs legislature through, ;like the no smoking in bars,, instead of apathy they might be met with thos 60,000 yankee fans that don't have anywhere elese to go.....ythey may have had a mass protests on their hands. sports may be the distraction the authorities need to keep us in line.....in line yeah.

do manchester U games sell out? ever time? how much are they? how much are the owners making.......if they didn't have high end players, wuold they continue to sell out every game? if they lost soime games, whould that be ok?

the players are the industry. everything else is shit. with out the players there is no game obvoiously., but with out good, highpaid players there is no victory. the owners are making a killing from ticket sales,,,,,,,only because their boys are playing quality football. so is rooney worth is rediculous salary, hell yes.;.....the players pay the bills, the rest are just on for the ride.

Too many teams are going into debt to buy better players who hopefully fill the seats, but if it doesn't happen, the cost of the debt can cripple a team for many years!

Leeds United went into heavy debt in the early 2000's, and even though they went very far into the Champions League, they still lost loads of cash, and eventually dropped down to the first division, which is considered third-tier in England.

For those who don't follow British football (most of my fellow yanks), the 3 teams at the bottom of each league get demoted to the next lower division, and the teams at the top of the leagues get promoted (top 2 teams get automatic promotion....the next 4 teams have a play-off to decide the third promotion spot).

Imagine if the worst 3 teams in MLB faced demotion to AAA, and if the top AAA teams got promoted to MLB.....it would make for much better competition all around.....teams such as the Royals would have to sign a few decent free agents to help ensure they don't get demoted to AAA.
