The Muslim calender

I know that these questions do not really belong on the MT, but I figured I would have the best shot to get an answer here.

I was wondering if any one here could explain to me how the Muslim calender refers to everything that happened before it was started (like the Gregorian calender has B.C. and A.D.). I was also wondering how people living by the Muslim calender celebrate birthdays. The Muslim calender is a lunar one, meaning it has around 11 days less than the Gregorian one, so are birthdays counted by the date or the season?

Thanks.
Still can't believe I met Mike Mccready at the Guggenheim and got a pic with him!!!!!

Most muslim countries will use the Hijri for religious dates but the gregorian for 'civil'/every day use. As far as I know, from my muslim friends, their birthdays were always celebrated on the anniversary of the date of their birth.

But maybe muslims from this board can confirm this?

According to the Gregorian or Muslim calendar?

Those that I know go by the gregorian calendar. These friends are muslims from various countries living in a European country or living in a muslim country such as Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, UAE & Indonesia. I also just asked a guy sitting in front of me at work (who is muslim, obviously!) and he confirmed the above.

Again, this is just what I have encountered. I don't know if ALL muslims would do the same.

The Chinese also use the lunar calender for religious festivals like the Chinese New Year. They still celebrate on December 31st but not as much as during the two week celebration of the Chinese New Year.

that's pretty much correct.. Islamic calendar for religious dates but otherwise the gregorian calendar... though I believe dates of births in certain countries such as Iran and Afghanistan go by the Islamic calendar
