Ed doesnt like Kings of Leon's music

I glanced at the Spin magazine article from what was it December of last year, and one of the Followills was talking about Ed. And he said Ed was maybe the first person to hear Only By the Night, and he said to them, the Followills, that they were going to be huge after this album came out. Ed was right of course, but more interestingly it was said, that Ed didnt really even like the music, according to the Followill in interview.

I found this kind of surprising. Ed seems overtly loyal to any band he respects. whether its bruce, neil, whoever. and i found it surprising, that although he obviously wasnt badmouthing KOL, he obviously isnt a big fan of their more arena rock sound.

interesting.

the only difference is that bruce and neil have made good music for decades. KOL made three good records, and then went to shit.

eddie is right if he doesn't like their new music.

Nah, nothing wrong there. He might like KOL guys, but not that album. And he didn't even say that.
It is actually self depreciating from Caleb to say that in an interview. It sounds like he is cool with that, too.

Read the article again - the Followill you are talking about made it sound like while Ed was listening he couldn't tell if he liked it - then he said they were going to be big and liked it not the way you are describing.

So take it easy - you obvious you don't like them. Which seems like the thing to do I guess when they got "big" but they have been around for a little bit. It's funny - their biggest album and everyone hates them, if Only By The Night is so bad why do so many like it?

Don't be a music snob and be like they're good but now not so much - b.s.! This is exactly what fans went through during No Code - that was the make or break for the real PJ fans. 4th album 5-6 years after they hit the scene - same thing and now look - so jump on or jump off - if you jump off remember this.

By the way listen to the new album - Come Around Sundown - if you don't like it you are just being a hater!

So what if he does or doesnt.

Personally I don't mind their studio work, but they are terrible live.

Expecially in outdoor arenas, aka Subiaco 2006.

I saw them get interviewed on Aust tv, and they said something similar.

Firstly they were so thankful to pj for all there support. THey were playing at the same venues out here as they were when they supported pj. And eddie didn't even have to come out on stage with them to try and drum up support.

Then he said Ed listened to only by the night and said you guy are going to be huge after this album. 'I don't think he even liked it.'

Come Around Sundown is actually a pretty solid album. Much, MUCH better than Only By The Night. There are quite a few songs that are reminiscent of their first 2 much better albums. It would be cool for the Kings to open again for Pearl Jam on the next tour.

You really should have posted the exact quote, because as others have said, you aren't telling it 100% factually correct. I don't have it in front of me, but it was more along the lines of, the dude said that Ed was the first person to tell them that they were about to ride a big wave or something (typical Ed) and the dude added he wasn't sure if Ed even liked the record really. But Ed is obviously a fan of their first few records, so its really not fair to say he doesn't like their music. He is definitely at least partly responsible for their rise and success, by introducing them to more people because it was music he liked, so your post here is really not accurate at all.

The new album, come around sundown is (in my opinion) better than 'only by the night'
there are some killler tracks on there eg back down south (with some nice slide guitar), beach side, Mary, mi amigo, the immortals and my personal favourite Pickup truck.
Also Ed was wearing a kings of leon t-shirt when i saw Pj in Manchester in Aug last year, so to say he doesn't like their music, seems a bit starange

  • so according to several posters I didnt post the exact quote. ed actually said he thought they were going to be huge after hearing Only By the Night and he didnt like the album.

Take a glance at my original post.

    I quote myself here:

"And he said Ed was maybe the first person to hear Only By the Night, and he said to them, the Followills, that they were going to be huge after this album came out. Ed was right of course, but more interestingly it was said, that Ed didnt really even like the music, according to the Followill in interview. "

You guys are on drugs or something.

Some choice quotes from you all: "You really should have posted the exact quote, because as others have said, you aren't telling it 100% factually correct. I don't have it in front of me, but it was more along the lines of, the dude said that Ed was the first person to tell them that they were about to ride a big wave or something (typical Ed) and the dude added he wasn't sure if Ed even liked the record really."

    and

Nah, nothing wrong there. He might like KOL guys, but not that album. And he didn't even say that.

So where in my post do i say anything different than whats been said by people on here who obviously are illiterate?

Bottom line, I read the article not 10 minutes before I posted the topic. A followill said ed heard the album first, told them they were going to be huge, but disliked the album.

i dont get the confusion here folks

Probalbly 'cause the title of the post is Ed doesn't like KOL's music, ie. albums 1-5
Also to call every one who has replied to your post 'illiterate', is a bit below the belt.

  • well playing semantics is childish. maybe he enjoys the other albums, but as far as im concerned its in black and white from the horses mouth. the followills would know, and wouldnt have said such a statement unless they knew it to be accurate. what were the kings of leon referring to when they said ed didnt like it? Were they referring to their band name? The bands hometown? The bands clothes? Their haircuts?

Its obvious to anyone who can read anything at all that its quite literally "ed didnt even like the album". So what is contained on an album? music right?

Would a more accurate title have been Ed didnt like Kings of Leon's Only By the Night?

He didnt like the music. Semantics is a dangerous game to play folks

so if ed doesnt like Only By the Night, and we infer than this is because they became more arena rock, we can assume he also dislikes the new album. Thats 2 albums out of 5.

Either he likes the music or he doesnt. The band or a member of it, said ed disliked the album, thus the bands music. whats more clear than that?

As I said in my first post on the topic, Ed was wearing a Kings of Leon T shirt whaen Pearl Jam played at the M.E.N. in Manchester aug 17th 2009, there are probably still photos on this website of him in it. Why would he wear that t shirt if he didn't like the band/their music?

Did a little research, and here is the exact quote, which is much closer to what I said, than what you were saying,...

"Ed [Vedder of Pearl Jam] actually called it immediately," Followill says. "He was one of the first people to hear Only by the Night, and he said, 'You're about to ride a big wave.' I don't even think he liked the record. But he knew immediately that we were about to go through something big."

    http://www.spin.com/articles/kings-leon ... -wanted-be

As people are saying he may not have liked one record (at least on first listen, and he never said he didn't like it, someone else said they didnt think the liked it) but overall I think you can defintley call Ed a KOL fan.

    my 02:
I think Ed definitely has an ear for what is going to be popular with the mainstream crowd, since KOL did blow up after that album. Followill states, that' "he thought maybe Ed didn't even like the record". I really just wanted to say that IF Ed doesn't like this album (seems to me, Followill is just assuming Ed didn't like the record), He is still a fan and admires their work.
Ed is definitely a KOL fan and admires and respects them. We all have bands that we love, but we don't have to love every album they put out. I'm sure Ed's idols have put out albums or songs that he didn't like as much as others.

    Oh, I agree in full!

But, agree though... Kings first 3 albums are exceptional. I have seen Ed sing on stage with Kings a few times in Australia, a song of their 3rd.

Similar to what Kurt said about Ed... "I like the guy, I just don't like his band." Fair enough.
