i lived in the dorms in 2004, and back then my university didnt allow students to download on their computers, even in their own dormroom. i was using torrent back then, and was told if i continued they'd pull my internet connection. i complied. until about 3 days before school ended. those 3 nights i had my computer on 24 hours a day downloading anything i could find. after all what could they do? Take my internet connection away for the last night?

so for those who still live in a university dorm, can you download?

Nope. Same policy here in United Kingdom. In fact, you can get arrested if you download illegal softwares. It's my first year here in UK (master degree) and I can't even download the computer programmes which we are taught inside the classroom - you know, in order to practice a little bit more. Instead, I must go to the labs if I want to practice. Even if it's 4 Celsius degrees outside. And I'm from Greece (25 Celsius degrees right now!) man! Give me a break! :x

I never knew that. Why is (was) downloading prohibited? I imagine you're using your own machines only on their connection, right?

Yep!... That's right my friend!... If I buy another internet connection, I can download whatever and whenever I want. But it's too expensive. And besides that, why should I do such a foolish thing, when my uni offers me access to internet for free (or so I want to believe, because probably I have already paid for this, through my tuition fees or my residence installments)?...

Interesting article I thought I'd post here...seemed a little appropriate given the topic:

Officer Gene Simmons to the rescue.

    http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/gene_simmons_fires_back_at_hackers.html

Kiss star Gene Simmons has reacted to hacker attacks on his websites by threatening those responsible with FBI action, jail and homosexual rape.

Simmons recently made headlines at a TV industry conference by saying the record industry had been too soft on those engaged in illegal downloading, stating that his position was: “Make sure there are no incursions. Sue everybody. Be litigious. Take their homes, their cars. Don’t let anybody cross that line.”

Members of an online community known as the Bureaucracy responded by launching a denial-of-service attack on GeneSimmons.com and SimmonsRecords.com – a method whereby a site’s servers are sent so many requests for web pages that they can’t cope, which results in the site becoming unavailable.

Although most people couldn’t see his message, Simmons reacted with a threat-laced statement: “Our legal team and the FBI have been on the case and we have found a few, shall we say, ‘adventurous’ young people, who feel they are above the law.

“And, as stated in my recent speech, we will sue their pants off. First they will be punished. Second, they might find their little butts in jail, right next to someone who’s been there for years and is looking for a new girlfriend.

“We will soon be printing their names and pictures. We will find you. You cannot hide.”

However, he later updated the page to say: “We’ve been told by government people to take down our previous post, so they can do what they do best: find out who you are and where you are. Stay tuned.”

The Bureaucracy points out that Simmons’ statements underline the reason why they’re attacking him, saying his viewpoint matches that of infamous UK legal firm ACS:Law, who attempt to make money by threatening people with court action for illegal downloading despite having very little evidence which would stand up to analysis.

One member of the outfit says: “If they could find us we wouldn’t be able to get away with it so often. Mr Simmons is wrong – and you can tell by the way he talks about the internet in his recent speech that he doesn’t really know how any of it works.

“Mr Simmons also appears to believe that all filesharing is illegal, which is also wrong. We’re not surprised he’s resorted to bullying threats, but it won’t work. Mr Simmons represents an old world view – many more important people than him have tried and failed to silence the voice of the people.”

Thanks for the report to RockRadio.

I went to college from 1997 to 2002. It was the golden age of the internet, I could download whenever and whatever I wanted. It was great.

i go to syracuse and they are SERIOUS about not downloading anything illegally or through torrent. i've download a few bootlegs off of friendly sites, like pearljambootlegs.com, but if they catch you using limewire or a torrent site, then they give you the boot.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

Wow!... You guys are like computer science legends!... :o:lol: I have to admit that I'm a little bit jealous of your times. Despite the lack of today's high technology, they were much more simple and romantic years.

I believe the college can be held liable for copyright infringement claims as well as the student. While that's the main reason colleges don't want kids downloading pirated files, it also hogs the network's bandwidth and there's always reason to be skeptical of pirated files having a virus/worm and wreaking havoc in their network.
