Poster frame question.

I've seen that a lot of you have framed your PJ posters and I was wondering where you got those done at. Did you go to a big store like Walmart or Office Depot or did you go to a specialty frame shop. I have a couple posters (some PJ, some non-PJ) that I want to frame, thanks in advance.

I get all of my framing completed at Michaels. They usually always have 50% off specials...

Posters never leave the store and they do solid work....i have 7 posters framed and had them all completed at michaels....

here are a list of Michaels in the greater Houston area:

    http://direct.where2getit.com/cwc/apps/w2gi.php?client=michaels&template=locator&city=houston&state=TX&postalcode=&country=US

    Good call

I got my Dusseldorf framed at Michaels a few weeks back, actually was 60% off. Looks great(2 mats,uv glass, acid free, wood frame) all for $126. Worth every penny, I will use them for future framing work

How often do they have sales?

Yeah, this is the way to go. Quality customizable frames, for a good price. Much cheaper than Michael's usually.

don't you have to do this yourself though? like order the materials and then cut the matting and all that good stuff?

i'm not sure how that site works but would be too afraid i'd fuck something up, like tear my own poster because i'm a clutz....

same here....no way could i frame my posters no do i want to....i've got a great local framer whose prices are good....:)

another framer is our own pj fan masterframer

Not sure how many of them there are around, but Hobby Lobby does a great job. They have the frames on site, acid free matting, the non reflective glass and more. Most prices range from $75 to $125.

    Nope.

Mats come cut. Frame comes in 4 peices. 4 screws and it's together.

I double matted a Vancouver poster recently. 2 acid free mats, foam backer, nice frame, uv plexi.....less than $70 including shipping. Put it together in 7 minutes.

Honestly and it seems I am the only one that feels this way, but do not go t Michael's or any of the other big chains.......

go to the specialty shop, you will pay more but you print will be handled with care and the best quality supplies will be used......

if not use the american frame place, I bought from them once it was fine but I still made my own mats and then got their frame......

when think about Michaels think about some kid, chewing gum talking on their cell phone not giving a shit about your print.... telling you it is archival because that is what you want to hear just as they dry mount it a piece of shitty board...... but do what you want......

they only offer the 50% off deal once a month or so but if you request it, they'll give it to you, especially if you're a continued customer.

i took my dusseldorf there and i really couldn't find a top and bottom matt that i liked....can you hook me up with a pic?

so far i've had my copenhagen, dc, vic, ottawa, italy butterfly and 2 dmb posters which are my ladies all framed at michaels...

My sister has my digital camera, I'll see if I could get it back so I could show you.Give me till the end of the week.I used Gray mat for the main mat(sorry my poster vocab is shit, the bigger if that helps) and red mat for around the white of the print(smaller mat). The gray the lady used is brilliant. It sort of has darker spots within it.Like I said I'll work on the pic.

If the lady woul have fucked up my print, you bet your ass they would be shopping on ebay for a replacement.I told her it was kinda on the limited side, and she looked me in the eye and said no worries.

I also asked for pics of her kids just in case

if you can, please look at your receipt and get the exact matting numbers for the grey and red. i just couldn't find a grey that i thought looked well enough....

i would really really really love to frame this one ASAP.... take your time but if you can give me your specs and shit, i can take a look at the store myself too....

    :)

I'll PM you the specs as soon as I get home from work, figure @ 7-8 pm

I'm waiting for their next sale to do My Copenhagen. Also I hope I'm lucky enough to get some cool prints at a few of the summer shows.Hoping for some kick-ass msg art!

Wow I had the exact opposite experience. I took my Ottawa poster to a few shops to get quotes. At one of the small time shops the guy was totally trying to convince me that I should permanently mount the poster to the backing board. When I went to Michaels the guy was very knowledgeable, knew exactly what I wanted, and was able to answer all my questions and explained that their process was fully reversible. Plus Michaels was considerably cheaper than any other place I looked at.

plus if anything happens michaels will fix it for free no matter where you are. i moved from san diego to seattle and one of my posters slipped in the frame so i took it in and they fixed it up no problem.

When you do this, how do you mount the artwork to the backing? I don't like the idea of doing a paper hinge myself. Do the photo corners work?

I use gummed linen tape (acid free)... next time I plan on trying mylar corners instead, not sure how that will work

This is probably a dumb question, but does the poster have to be flat before bringing it in to be framed? I have a poster from one of the EV shows, but it's currently rolled up and I don't know if I have to flatten it first before they'll frame it.

All the coupons i've seen for Michael's in CA always exclude custom framing, what gives? Anyone in the Bay Area, CA know of a good reasonably priced framing shop? I think I'm gonna resort to American Frame online.
