Was just wondering if anyone else has made this kind of connection with the animal world.

For the past year I've been strangely drawn to the Great Blue Heron. At certain times, at the sight of this bird, a single word or phrase comes to mind that seems designed to teach me something.

The GBH is a wonderous bird. I have sat and watched them fish for hours. I guess my totem, or more accurately, my white whale, would have to be a mountain lion. Just like Jack in this award winning short story (coughshamelessplugcough).

Surely some of you "cougar" hunters can relate... ;)

I send something to those guys every 3 months or so. They've only rejected one piece, a little something called, "Naked, Wet, and Wild in Idaho." It was a little edgy for them. They eventually post back issues online and I think you can read those for free, but most people have a subscription. Thousands of Idahoans have read my adventure stories... it's a start.

I appreciate it, bro. For now they are all available on my blog, but I will soon put all the true adventure stories into a collection and get it published. Once I have it for sale, I pull the free stuff. So, read up while it's free. Here is my favorite recent story...

    sure
it's called animal guides or totems
i have read books on this and other books of spiritual energy and happenings.
mostly native american/shamism/earth medicine/psychic energy and whatnot books.
    great stuff.

    my totems are hooved animals.
deer, elk, moose, and the like.
and that makes perfect sense to me.
i am very much like those animals.
elusive as fuck and get spooked easy... im gone.

    mickeyrat, do you meditate?
do you understand how to do such a thing?

meditate on these questions, envision a forest.
    you will be greeted.

I once walked to about 10 ft from one without noticing it (not sure how  )....it finally got spooked and took flight....Not expecting a 97 ft wingspan to emerge from the weeds so close to me, I nearly fell over, and it took me about ten minutes to get my heart rate down.
(Did you guys see the size of that chicken??? :D )
But no, unfortunately...I don't think I'm in touch with the spirit world enough to have animal revelations at this point in my life.

i've only ever saw them years ago in a dream...

it makes sense i'd have a connection with ocelots :)

  • Yeah, for me I believe it's butterflies. I love them. I get a strange, good feeling when I see one or if they land on me. It's like, I instantly re-charge :?

Hummingbirds for me. We probably have them here 6 months out of the year. I put out feeders and grow the flowers they like. I can watch them endlessly and I identify individuals each season. Sometimes I will spot one at an unusual time or setting and it always feels like a special omen. :D All birds fascinate me but I am drawn to hummingbirds as if they are here just for me.

They seem to have all migrated south as of about 3 weeks ago. I always feel kind of a let down after they're gone. :(

I have one feeder right outside my kitchen window. I can stand there and watch them, only a couple of feet away. They will leave the feeder for a few moments and hover by the window looking at me, then return to the feeder.

When I work in my garden they will buzz by me. If I happen to get close to the feeder they will chirp warnings at me. They are a marvel and a delight.

To have them year round sounds wonderful! The only consolation when they leave is that they're followed by the Monarchs on their way to Mexico. The butterflies like my flower garden too.
