No version of Crown of Thorns with EV singing is better than a version with Shawn Smith singing. Fact. Shawn Smith is the spiritual successor to Andrew Wood.
My Pearl Jam shows: 1 in 1995, 2 in 1998, 20 in 2003, 13 in 2006, 3 in 2007, 8 in 2008, 5 in 2009, 4 in 2010, 5 in 2012. EV: 8 in 2011, 1 in 2012. Brad: 1 in 1998, 1 in 2002.
He plays it often. Brad shows, Satchel shows, and his solo shows. He played it when I saw him in Yorkshire solo a couple of years back.

BRAD: 2007 10 19 Neumos, Seattle: I Wanna Be Yo Daddy, Winter Bites, Mr. Liberty (With Morals), With Yo' Heart Not Yo' Hands (these are all Andy songs from his pre-MLB band, Malfunkshun).
MALFUNKSHUN: 2010 04 14 Showbox, Seattle: With Yo' Heart Not Yo' Hands, Winter Bites (Malfunkshun reunion with Shawn on vocals).
MOTHER LOVE BONE: 2010 04 14 Showbox, Seattle: Stardog Champion, Holy Roller, Gentle Groove, Hold Your Head Up (MLB reunion with Shawn on vocals. The last song is a song by Argent that MLB did cover for an Argent tribute album that was never released).
I know I have some 1997 USA Brad tour bootlegs on cassette in storage that have some Andy covers on them; most notably, Crown of Thorns and With Yo' Heart Not Yo' Hands.

I agree 100%
Respectfully, I disagree.
Smith has the musical chops, of that there can be no doubt.
I think, though, that Wood's and Smith's approaches to showmanship, live performance, and lyrical composition are quite different.
I thought years ago that were MLB to continue Smith would have been the obvious choice given his amazing voice and keyboard playing, but as more time goes on I feel that it would have been a "wrong" fit. To me, MLB was Wood's band. The tone of cheekiness it struck was an extension of Wood. Smith, being a different man, would have had to impose his own personality on the songwriting and they would have wound up a much different band than what is represented on Apple.
Just my opinion.
And no, I didn't say "extension of Wood" to get a laugh.

I was one of the lucky ones to witness it live. What an epic show and an absolutely amazing performance.
