The Spectrum will not go away quietly. Lou Scheinfeld - who has spent more than a year at the doomed arena, cataloging memorabilia - says he thwarted the theft of the giant Pearl Jam banner that hung outside to advertise the final show a year ago.

Scheinfeld noticed a Facebook page on which people were plotting the removal of the 50-by-30-foot, 200-pound banner. "One guy said he would rappel up the wall, and a woman offered to drive her convertible under it," says Scheinfeld, who had the banner taken down and stashed inside the Spectrum.

The online reaction was furious.

But you can buy it. On Friday, arena owner Comcast-Spectacor will go online with a 10-day auction of hundreds of items of Spectrum memorabilia. The Pearl Jam banner, as well as a similarly huge one advertising Bruce Springsteen, will be up for sale. Starting bid for each banner is $2,500.

About 600 items - including jerseys, photos, plaques, posters, flags, letters, doors, neon signs, goalie nets, basketball nets, and directional signs - are on view at www.rememberthespectrum.com. Anything not sold will go on the block at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 19 on-site.

Scheinfeld says 25 percent of the proceeds will go to the Comcast-Spectacor Foundation, with the rest covering the demolition. The site is to become a destination called Philly Live.
