Would someone please tell me a bit about the camping spaces at Bonnaroo. We are coming in a 12 passenger van and I was wondering how much ground space we will have. Is the space in front/behind or to the side of the vehicle?

as long as it doesn't bother your neighbors you can take as much space as you want/need...you literally pull in and start setting up camp...it can be a free for all at times, depending on when you arrive

last year I had my tent and a huge screen room, with plenty of space all around

there are no designated spaces for your car>tent>anything else

and as there will be thousands of cars pulling in all at the same time, you will either set up behind or in front of your car

this should give you an idea of what I'm talking about

I've heard from others that if you left people around you know early that you plan on leaving early, they will usually move and let you get out.

Last year there was a mass exodus on Sunday evening right after the White Stripes. The resulting traffic jam lasted two hours. It might happen again after Death Cab for Cutie. You can usually get out by late Sunday morning because people will be packing their tarps and stuff to get ready to leave later. Not all areas are as disorganized as the photo - some actually have open spaces like streets. Depends upon how organized the set up is. If you want a cheap hotel room and a shower, there are lots of places in Chattanooga about an hour away. I am leaving after Death Cab For Cutie and staying at the Motel 6 in Dalton Georgia ($35). After morning rush hour, I will head to Columbia.

It's not nearly as organized as Euro festivals.

Things should clear out on the sunday, most people leave that night anyways.
    good...
do YOU know how you're getting to Columbia?

sunday evening you will be fine...the early morning maybe not so much

though last year we also left after the white stripes and when we got back to our site to pack up someone had moved our tent and shade room a good distance away to make room for their exit, kinda sucked as they weren't careful in moving our stuff, but I understoond

and yes there are roads within the campground naturally, but unless you happen to pull in right on the perimeter of your "campground" you will be boxed in to some extent

speaking of campsites, there are around 75 specific sites, each with their own name...you will see when they hand you the guide at check in

here's a map I modified with my campsites from previous years

All those getting to the Roo early should try and catch Newton Faulkner, he's huge in the UK right now and seems to be touring the US hard so maybe some of you will of heard of him. If not basically he's a rootsy guitarist with an interesting guitar technique of basically playing while using it for precussion at the same time, perhaps the best example being his cover of Massive Attacks 'Teardrop.' He's also very entertaining doing a great impression of the Kings Of Leon and an incredible one man version of Queen's Bohemiem Rhapsody. Not everyone's cuppa tea granted but if you wanna be entertained and enjoy some great acoustic based songs then you'll love it. Okay shameless plug over, he's from my hometown and played my festival a few years back ya see.

    ok..more info needed :p

friend and I are getting into Nashville on Friday am, no idea how we're going to get to Bonnaroo (their shuttle is a complete rip-off and we don't need the return anyway).

but, we will want to join our friends that are already there..can we do that or are we forced to camp separately, even though we won't have a car ourselves (will get a ride of some sort most likely)?

Will you being staying in the same tent with your friends or are you bringing your own? I'm assuming that you're bringing your own, which means you won't be able to camp with them

The Roo folks will try to restrict everyone to a roughly 10'x10' space in front of or behind their car, but it can turn into a free for all (as someone already said). I'm going in a tiny little toyota yaris, so hopefully that'll leave more room for camp setup!

:( .. really stupid system..a festival is MEANT to be about sharing, party etc..
I mean if we find enough space to put our tent in their 'designated' space, who's to stop us?

mm..might have to ask them to bring 2 tents and set up an extra one for us ;)

much more group friendly in Europe:
leave your cars in a parking lot (you don't need them for the 3-4 days anyway...and you can get out anytime if you need to), then get your gear and find a big enough space on the camping grounds for all your mates..
hell at Werchter last year we managed to get another 2 tents next to Jason's, having arrived 2 days into the festival.

Having your friends setup your tent when they get there so they can claim that space is a good idea. You might be able to get your tent set up by theirs when you arrive, but there's no guarantee on that. Maybe you will get lucky and they will be parked next to people without much or any camping gear.

Sandra, listen to Jason, go with the flow and make the best out of any 'obstacles'. Remember you'll be in Tennessee... people might not be as welcoming of your observation that all things European are better... as they were in Chicago ;)
