Racing Bikini-clad women instead of horses? Degrading?

An Australian horse race track has taken marketing to a whole new level.

In an effort to draw attention to their track, the Gold Coast Turf Club in Queensland will be racing women instead in their first annual Bikini Track Sprint.

The race is similar to the 2008 Bikini Beach Mile race that was held at Hollywood Park Racecourse in California, where bikini-clad women were locked in the stalls at the starting gate and raced to the finish line.

According to the website, the race is open to "fillies and mares" who are willing to dole out $60 to participate and race for the chance to win $5,000.

While the event is intended to be all in good fun, it has drawn criticism from people who accused the event of stooping to "a new tacky low."

But that hasn't fazed the club's director Jennifer Bartels who told the UK's Daily Mail Online, "Any publicity is good publicity. I feel using ladies jumping out of the barriers is akin to someone jumping out of a birthday cake."

The club's chief executive understands where the criticism is coming from but insists the race is all in good taste.

"There will be some people that raise their eyebrows," Grant Sheather told the paper. "That is to be expected ... It will be done in good taste and we are trying to attract some competitive runners, we want to see the sports stars."

Goldcoast.com.au conducted a poll which concluded that only 27% of respondents considered the race degrading while 73% believed it wasn't.

The race is set to take place on Dec. 4.

Do you think it's in poor taste and/or degrading to women, or something all in good fun?

I don't think it's in bad taste or degrading to women at all, it's a volunteer race and they pay 60 bucks to do it for the chance to win $5000, people do things like this all the time if someone else feels that it's degrading to them then they don't have to attend right ?
me personally I wouldn't spend the money to go watch women in bikinis run around a horse track..crap I had a hard time giving money at a strip club which is why I can count on one hand(well maybe 2) how many times I've been to one
but at the end of the day it's all choices people make.

At least the women have the choice of running.....

I say somewhat degrading, but I'm sure they will get enough volunteers.

I thought for sure you would have already paid your $60. You know, you're bikini could have all kinds of sex ed statements all over it. Here's your chance to educate. ;)

    Poor taste? I think yes.

Degrading? I think no. I doubt any of the women running will feel degraded.

but I don't know that it necessarily matters whether or not the women involved feel degraded or not, it's the behaviour that degrades the image of women, no? that's the impression I get from the argument against stripping and such.

I see that side, but I personally do think it matters if the person involved is the one that feels degraded.

If degrading women for entertainment was a crime, then Ellen would've been taken off the air years ago.

If you wanna to do, then that's your CHOICE!

it's no more degrading than porn... but then i don't think porn is degrading either.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

:lol::lol::lol: somewhere out there is a woman making bank on this stuff..how degrading is that

    Godfather.
  • i'm not sure what images some of you people have in your heads regarding this but i don't see it as degrading at all. it's not like these girls are being dragged by the hair, locked up in the stalls and being beaten with sticks (like they do horses) while they are running. they are choosing to compete.

they are apparently trying to encourage athletes to compete, hence the hefty prize money. the track is going to be laid out like a proper 100m track. and wait for it, omg the girls will be wearing bikinis. they will be showing their skin. the horror

you guys should be used to it by now. track and field athletes have been wearing gear that's not far off the bikini look for years. surely you don't find that degrading too?

Are they going to make the Bikini-clad women racing a regular event? is there going to be a mud wrestling handicap hurdle?

  • I think the controversy isn't the bikini part ALONE, it was that they were running the race on a track for animals. You can see why female advocacy groups would be all over that one.

I'm not against it. I think it's good honest fun.

female advocacy groups just need something to complain about... any excuse... if they spent as much tine ironing as they did complaining the world would be a better and much less crumpled place.

  • and did you know that female beach volleyball players are FORCED to wear those skimpy clothes? our friend wikipedia has the info:

    Uniform controversy

Finnish beach volleyball star Riikka Lehtonen and opponentIn 1999, the FIVB standardized beach volleyball uniforms. The ruling federation reduced uniform sizes for both male and female competitors, with the swimsuit becoming the required uniform for women,[7] and shorts and tank-tops for men. This drew the ire of some athletes.[8]
The FIVB asserted that female beach volleyball players have the option of playing in a one-piece uniform, but that most prefer the two-piece bikini.[9][10]

Indeed, notable competitors like Natalie Cook[11] and Holly McPeak[9] have confirmed the FIVB's claims, stating that the uniforms are practical for a sport played on a sand beach during the heat of summer, but British Olympian Denise Johns claimed that the regulation uniform is intended to be "sexy" and to draw attention.[12]

Some conservative cultures have expressed moral objections to the swimsuit as a uniform. At the 2007 South Pacific Games, rules were adjusted to require less revealing shorts and cropped sports tops. At the 2006 Asian Games, only one Muslim country fielded a team in the beach volleyball series, amid concerns the uniform was inappropriate.[13]
