Mad Season & Temple Of The Dog

As most of you know, Mad Season is Mike McCready's early-90s side project with Layne Staley and friends, and Temple of the Dog is basically Pearl Jam with Chris Cornell of Soundgarden.

What are your thoughts on these bands?

Temple of the Dog put out one amazing album. Say Hello to Heaven is an incredible, soulful song with, in my opinion, the single best vocal performance in 90s rock thanks to Chris Cornell.

Mad Season album is solid too, heavily incorporating Staley's blues roots. November Hotel is my favorite instrumental song that I know of, and River of Deceit is great as well.

Feel free to talk about other side projects, like Matt Cameron playing drums for Hero w/ Kroeger and Scott.

  • I'm going to make a rather bold statement and say that TOTD is one of my favorite albums of all time; probably one of the greatest rock albums ever released IMO. Mad Season were special, too. It would have been awesome if they could have made that second album with Lanegan at the helm on vocals. Quite obviously, I hold both bands in very high regard.
  • I suppose TOTD has to be seen ina separate light to other side projects that the guys have been involved in. TOTD was basically an obituary to Andy from Chris, Stone and Jeff. They had this stuff clogging their heads trying to make sense of what had happened. I read before it was done in two weeks and released very limitedly. With Pearl Jam taking off, and MTV sticking Hunger Strike on Heavy rotation, the whole thing became a little bastardised for Chris.

But hey, we got a great rock record out of it that stands the test of time.

    They are both wonderful albums.
They both hold two of McCready's finest moments in the studio (November Hotel & Reach Down)

Yet Pearl Jam still refuses to unleash him like that on a song :(

  • Mad Season is probably one of my top 5 albums of all time. I keep my VHS around for one reason and one reason only:

    -to watch my wedding video?
    NOPE
    -to watch home movies?
    NOPE
-to watch Pearl Jam pro-shot video of Sunfest 1993?
    NOPE

  • Both records are great. I've always kinda lumped Temple of the Dog in with Mirrorball because of the "Pearl Jam backing someone who isn't Eddie" factor.
