So, as the title implies, you have to pick a song that's been covered and mention the artists and which version you like better. Also, weigh in on the entry above. I'll start.

Blinded By the Light - Springsteen and Manfred Mann. As much as it pains me to admit, I like the Manfred Mann version better. I was listening to the Springsteen version this morning and realized it didn't have the presence of the Manfred Mann version. Anyway...

The Pusher by Steppenwolf vs The Pusher by Blind Melon

Blind Melon! No question. Such a great song. RIP Shannon.

I agree with both. As for REally Got Me Van halen makes that song so much more fun and vibrant but Pretty woman is a classic in it's orginal.

Mine is a little more obscure
    The Bit
Orginally by the Melvins covered by MAstodon

this is a really hard one for me becuase they are both cool. The bit by the melvins sounds well sludgy like the melvins while the bit by mastodon sounds... like mastodon sludgy metal.

I prefer mastodon's version though becuase the drumming is sensation with Brann adding his talents to it and they just kick the crap out of the song.
Mastodon's cover of the Bit Wins in my book :)

OP, I'm all with you...I think Manfred Mann's version of Blinded By The Light owns. The extended version with that killer solo...

Smashing Pumpkins version of Landslide over Fleetwood Mac. And over Dixie Chicks. But all are great in their own way.

I do like all of them it is hard for me to choose between the pumpkins and fleetwood. I think i actually lean towards fleetwood though.

    How about another threesome:

    All Along the Watchtower
bob dylan, jimi hendrix, neil young

I'm a huge neil young fan and a big bob fan but Jimi made this his song. It was awesome.

That's my reasoning. His version is much more emotional to me. There is nothing in his version to be happy about, and he just further emphasized that.

I probably like the NIN version just a little better but love the Cash version too.

I like the Cash cover of The Beatles "In My Life" better, though.

    Voodoo Child

    SRV or Jimi??

I'm going to say Jimi, although I think both are pretty damn sweet.

    I vote Jimi on Watchtower
Voodoo Child definitely goes to SRV in my book though

  • Some tough calls on here. My votes for ones I have an opinion on: Blind Melon, Roy Orbison, Manfred Mann, NIN, Pumpkins, Jimi (Watchtower and VC).

Get this, The Bangles rocked the shit out of Simon & Garfunkel's Hazy Shade of Winter.

I love their version of Hazy Shade of Winter. It's their best song by far. And I like it better than the original too.
  • I too dig The Bangles Hazy shade of Winter.

Also, backtracking, Cash gets my vote on Hurt.

    definitely

Yeah. I just have to appreciate the original brilliant minds. Bernie and Elton wrote some incredible music in the 70's.

The albums "Madman Across The Water" and "Honky Chateau" should be owned by all music appreciators.

    SUCH A GOOD CALL!

One of my all time favorite songs is I Shall Be Released.

Original by Bob Dylan. Amazing Covers by The Band, Joe Cocker and The Heptones. Of course there was the epic performance by everyone and their mother during The Last Waltz, which is my favorite version, but that one aside, I can't decide. I think it depends on my mood.

Today: Joe Cocker, The Band, The Heptones, Bob Dylan
