A Polish couple have denounced their past as neo-Nazis after discovering they are Jewish.

The couple, identified only by their first names Pawel and Ola, where childhood sweethearts and grew up as part of a white power gang in the Polish capital Warsaw.

The pair, both 33, are featured in a CNN documentary about Poles finding their Jewish roots after learning several years ago through the Jewish Historical Institute that both of them were technically Jews.

"It was unbelievable — it turned out that we had Jewish roots — it was a shock," Ola told CNN.

Ola said at the time of finding out the news both were "100 percent nationalists".

"Back then we were skinheads and it was all about white power... that Jews were the biggest plague and the worst evil of this world," Ola said.

Both are now members of their local orthodox synagogue.

Pawel said while he has regrets and feels sorry for the people that he beat up, he does not "lash himself over it".

"I don't hold a grudge against myself," he said.

so, once upon a time in a land far away, Pawel and Ola used to think that they were superior to others because they were part of the aryan race and when that didn't work out so good they decided they were superior to others because they are gods chosen people.

as long as they get to be superior to someone I guess it's all working out ok for them.

This is actually not all that uncommon in Poland (well, the skinhead thing maybe), but people finding out they're actually Jewish only once they are well into adulthood happens a lot. After the war there were a lot of survivors who figured it was better to just "stop" being Jewish (especially given continuing Polish and Soviet antisemitism), and there were a lot of Jewish kids who were hidden by, or ended up with non-Jewish families, and who were left orphaned by the war. In both cases the children were very often raised with no awareness of their Jewish heritage, and would only find out the truth in adulthood (often at the deathbed of a parent, who would confess their own Jewish roots/the Jewish roots of the child's biological parents).

I wish there was some kind of procedure to induce double personality, I would like to see this guy kicking his own ass again and again, and arguing about "white power" with himself.

It would be nice if some people arguing about illegal immigration discover that they are not "really legal" and their adopted parents hide the truth from them just to protect them

i have no doubt thats true. im just incredibly amused that it was neo nazis who discovered this. and now theyre members of their local orthodox synagogue church. its like zero to 100 in 3.4 seconds.

they were wrong about the whole neo nazi thing, you'd think it would give them pause in how to approach things....like maybe judaism doesn't have all the answers either. like the idea that maybe life isn't so black and white should be setting in right about now.
