Did last decade produce any modern rock/alt rock classics?

i know most of us hate modern rock or alt rock as defined by the stuff that is played on any alt rock/modern rock radiostation in the country, linkin park, creed, nickelback, three days grace. those bands.

but of the bands that fit that mold, does anyone think any classic albums were released from say 2000-2010 in the alt rock genre?

Im not talking indie here. Im talking bands like seether or hinder. bands who litter the radio all day every day.

So, did 2000-2010 produce any classic albums in this lowly genre, or was it all...crap

  • My favorite album from last decade is easily The Raconteur's Consolers of the Lonely. Everything about that album kicks ass all the through to my favorite Jack White song from any band, Carolina Drama.

    decent albums perhaps? classics..highly doubtful.
  • i think that the last decade gave us the black keys; pretty badass rock and roll in my book.
  • Maybe Kings of Leon "Because Of The Times"

I think this might be an answer that is personal or subjective.

For instance, there are a number of records that have been released in the past decade that I consider to be classics in my mind because they hold a certain sentiment.

There are obvious ones, but most of the albums I'd select aren't necessarily the majority of the definite ones. Like Lateralus...an excellent, obvious choice in my book. It would make my list for sure.

Perhaps we should expand to just rock as a general category. Genres sometimes put up boundaries for people.

To clarify, I am not advocating the likes of Nickelback, Hinder, and all others of this type.

Them Crooked Vultures album has not left my CD player since it came out last november. Almost a year later and I play it every fuckin day. I

I think people are throwing around the term "classics" way too liberally here.....

To the original poster, I would answer with a simple no.

The only album in recent memory that I consider stellar from start to finish is Because of the Times, but it wasn't mainstream rock.

I think youd have to ask someone that listens to that stuff-doubt youd find them here

Id guess that some might marilyn manson has a classic record or two

but then that would be "goth" and not "modern" or "alt" rock

you cannot neatly classify bands into genres where the lines are blurred

Why not include bands like Arcade Fire and Wilco?

No one listens to or cars whats on the radio anymore. Bands like TV on the Radio and Arcade fire would have been the Alternative bands if they came out in the 90's.

Just my opinion. By closeing out those bands you are really giving the 00's a bad name. There was a great deal of wonderful music from that time period

Definitely. Love that album. I was so disappointed in 'Day & Age'. Hopefully their next one is better.

I dunno how many there are. Plenty of personal classics, but I don't think some of them really have the widespread appeal to be really considered classic.

    Lateralus
    Them Crooked Vultures
White Stripes-Elephant, Get Behind Me Satan
    Johnny Cash-American IV
    The Mars Volta-De-loused....., Amputechture, Octahedron
    Mastodon-Crack the Skye
PJ-Binaural..don't think the other stuff measures up, are any b-sides comps considered classic...Lost Dogs has the stuff'
    APC-Mer De Noms
    RHCP-By The Way, Stadium Arcadium
    Black Crowes-Warpaint, Before the Frost
    Dr. Dog-Fate
    Drive By Truckers-Southern Rock Opera
    Modest Mouse-We Were Dead.......
My Morning Jacket-It Still Moves, Z
    System of a Down-Toxicity
    Tom Petty-Last DJ
    Velvet Revolver-Contraband

Anything by Jack White, The Black Keys and Kings of Leon not named Only By The Night.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

Seriously, while there was lots of really good to great stuff released in the last decade, I can't think of one I would call a classic. Drive-by Truckers "The Dirty South" might fit the bill though.

    thats not a bad list

but c'mon "modern" alt" compared to nickleback :lol::lol:

I think rogue wave and death cab might be on that list-but not sure if any of it rises to the level of classic

My opinion of some great or possibly future classic albums from 00 to 10:

QOTSA: Rated R, Songs for the Deaf, Lullabies to Paralyze
    Dr. Dog: Fate
    Black Keys: Rubber Factory, Thickfreakness
    Dinosaur Jr. Beyond, Farm
    Beck: Sea Change
    Mark Lanegan: Bubblegum
    Black Angels: Passover
Drive By Truckers: Southern Rock Opera
Eagles of Death Metal: Heart On
Green Day: American Idiot (I struggled to put this one on since it got overplayed so much, but it's still a great rock/pop punk record)
My Morning Jacket: It Still Moves
Sharon Jones: 100 days 100 nights
    The Strokes: Is This It?
White Stripes: Elephant, Get Behind Me, Satan
    Wilco: Yankee Foxtrot Hotel
    Ryan Bingham: Mescalito

About 75% of the music I listen to is before 2000, so I'm not the best one to comment on modern music, but the above albums are pretty strong imo and I think will stand the test of time to be classics (At least on the PJ message board :-P )
