the illusion of love

dissolved into the night
I could have danced with you forever
raindrops on the window
the words were right there
I held my breath to hold onto the feeling
will it ever return? no never
beneath the darkening sky
I let you walk off into a brand new day
I gave you back a future
and closed my eyes to the pain,
the grace and the pleasure
I wake to a heartbeat
roll over to see a sleeping stranger
her pale features
I'll pant her to look just like you
a masquerade
a flowing ball gown
now crumpled on the floor beneath her
I keep her masked
the illusion of love
is better by candlelight
the shadows cry
their eyes sting from the lust now in sight
but I'm not really there
my thoughts visit another night
another song
another flowing gown
another time
when I could have danced with you forever
Peace, Love.
