Ok so I know most people look down on these kind of shows, and I completely understand why, but every once in a while they do seem to uncover some talent. I saw the end of X factor tonight, and this one guy had an AMAZING voice (well at least to my ears), kind of took me by surprise, check it out - make sure you watch his performance to the end:

I will say one thing. Or two maybe. :) Me and the missus saw this and thought this guy did a good enough job with this song. Two, cheers to the programme makers for screening this as I immediately reached for the Johnny Cash version and as a result started a chain reaction of listening to more JC as well as plenty Mark Lanegan, Gutter Twins, Bonnie Prince Billy. Nick Cave, Tindersticks and many other great artists including PJ and a delightful night with no more television was enjoyed by all... :D
Like a book among the many on a shelf...

    Dublin 02 Arena - 22/6/10. Belfast Odyssey Arena - 23/6/10. London Hyde Park - 25/6/10. Berlin Wuhlheide - 30/6/10.
    Manchester MEN - 20/06/12. Manchester MEN - 21/06/12

Some top picks in that list! To be honest this guy is probably way too good for a show like X Factor, but at least he's got some exposure now I guess.

These tv shows represent the downside of what John Logie Baird was getting at when he sat twiddling his thumbs in his shed that split second he went from no idea to a a shiny lightbulb above his head and created the social downfall of mankind! TV sucks in the main and it's only comedy and documentary keeping it alive IMO. You may if you wish stick the rest up your arse.... :D Me and the missus have many disputes about tv shows and we both agree we could live without it. But yeah, this guy was above the norm as far as this kind of show usually delivers.

I pretty much agree. I'm not completely against the concept per se, and I know it can make for entertaining tv, but it is so painfully formulaic.

I always wonder what these shows would do with someone like this guy, who clearly has an idea as to who he is as an artist - as opposed to most of them who go on there and get molded into some generic product. Is it possible to win a show like this and actually bring out some good music?

I honestly wish there was an avenue for genuine talent to show what they can do and have a chance to take it somewhere else but as the missus pointed out about the show tonight, it's obvious right away there is no interest from the programme makers in over 25's as the first thing they get them to do is a Lady Gaga cover. Image means a lot to the panel and it's only the public who can assure real talent like the sadly much maligned Susan Boyle can progress ahead of the usual shite like last years winner Joe Mc...? Some of the runners up from these shows do better than the eventual winners and although I'm not a fan of people like Susan Boyle or the majority of people who participate in these shows, some people in this country have a lot of talent that will never be heard because the image doesn't fit. I wish that guy from tonight all the best from the bottom of my heart but I doubt we'll see his face again despite the fact he has a better voice than many artists in this country including Guy Harvey, Matt Bellamy, etc...

Not only did I watch it to the end I watched it twice.

Definitely an amazing talent I just hope the programme doesn't try to mould him too much as he has everything and just needs an audience. Hopefully he writes songs already so if he makes it he's not forced into the covers and bland pop ballads.
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?

We always watch the X Factor especially the auditions. It's when the lunatics are let out of the asylum and there are even a few that have good voices. Most of the winners disappear but so what, it's just entertainment.
  • I just read that he lists his influences as Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews and RATM!! Wonder if he ever visits the board?!

Just done a bit of digging, turns out the guy from the youtube clip I posted has a band, here's their myspace, sounds pretty solid:
