62% of 12th graders in the U.S. have had sexual intercourse.
32% of 9th graders have had sex.
8% of 9th graders had sex before age 13.
21% of 12th graders have had sex with 4 or more people.

45% of 12th graders did not use a condom last time they had sex.
90% of 9th graders were not on the pill the last time they had sex.
98% of 9th graders were not on Depo (the shot) last time they had sex.

I'm thinking about this because I just read that some members of our local school board would rather shut down school-based health centers entirely than comply with the state law that allows them to provide birth control. (And we have the highest teen pregnancy rate in the country.) :(

This is scary. And you gotta wonder how they collect that information and if the kids in the poll are 100% honest. I'll bet its even higher in actuality.

too bad more arent like me and Stephen Tyler:

The data is collected through the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS), where they basically just hand out surveys to kids in school (which is interesting, since it doesn't count kids who have dropped out of school, who might have different risk behaviors).

Could be higher, although I would bet there are also a bunch of kids who would lie and say they have had sex when they haven't even on a confidential survey.

These statistics sound like my high school back in the 70's in suburbia USA
not much has changed I guess

There is no way the stats could have been this high back in the early 90's. Or my high school sucked.

There was the fear of aids and STD's along with grunge fashion making everyone look like a combo between a trucker and a carnival barker. Now, those young whipper-snappers are wearing suggestive clothing that would have made Norma Jeane Baker blush.

I don't know... based on my high schools in the early '90s, I thought they were low. And I'm pretty sure there's data to suggest that kids are having LESS sex these days than they used to.

Okay, here's the data for 1991 (the furthest back that this data is available):

67% of 12th graders in the U.S. have had sexual intercourse. (It was 62% in 2009.)
54% of 9th graders have had sex. (32% in 2009)
    13% of 9th graders had sex before age 13. (8% in 2009)
25% of 12th graders have had sex with 4 or more people. (21% in 2009)

59% of 12th graders did not use a condom last time they had sex. (45% in 2009)
There was no data for the pill or Depo.

Looks like your high school just sucked. ;)

Not to disrespect God (as some other people have put it as of late  )
But I find the whole birth control thing really sad.

If abstinence only works there wouldn't be the amount of 14 year olds getting knocked up as there are.
But as usual, religious dogma probably got in the way of any realistic solutions.

Kinda like how "condoms cause aids"

We have easy access to birth control here and reasonable education for year 11 (15-16 yr olds) but still have the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the OCD. Parents need to take responsibility and do something earlier - my mum put me on the pill at 15 and made sure I was well informed - but most of my friends never talked about sex with their parents. It shouldn't be left to the schools to educate because most of the time 16 is too late to be told about STI's and pregnancy etc.

If these numbers are true... and it truely is the parent's responsibility to conduct sex education for their kids...
Then, Parents today suck as parents.

Because the kids are having sex or because they're doing it without using contraception? Or because some parents actively oppose comprehensive sex education in the schools (and especially at the age where it would be most useful) because their heads are buried in the sand and they think kids aren't having sex and sex ed would actually cause them to have sex?

The numbers seem about right to me. I grew up in the 60's (the free love era) lol, and I don't think much has changed over the years except maybe during the aids scare. Hormones rule regardless. Kids need access to information, birth control and other options open to them. :)

Well.. mostly because I always hear the argument raised about the schools are not the ones who should be teaching the kids about Sex... that's the parent's job. Apparently, if the numbers are true... the parents completely SUCK at teaching their own kids about sex.
And the whole, 'abstinence olny' crap... well, we all know how well that worked in the Palin household. We know for a fact that Mr. and Mrs. Palin obviously SUCK at teaching abstinence only to their kids... what chance to inner city kids have?
My point of view... kids fuck. Kids love to fuck. Kids have ALWAYS loved to fuck. So, if they are going to fuck... which, apparently, they are, then SOMEONE needs to teach them to at the very LEAST, be safe while doing so. Since the parents SUCK at teaching, perhaps, the teachers can teach them the hazzards of sex. Because, let's face reality.... kids fuck.

I went into my daughter's HS here in S. FL to speak to her guidance counselor and I couldn't believe the TIGHT suggestive clothing girls wore and the baggie clothing the boys wore. Even though they have to wear school authorized uniforms, they still stretch the limits. I also saw several girls who were pregnant along with one from my daughter's swim team. She wants to continue swimming till she can't anymore.

Interesting because there seems to be an epidemic the last few years of boys wearing tight clothing...
