Thanks for all the advice I have had so far (some really great people on these boards!!)

So heres the deal...... below are the pedals I have, I have some cash at hand now and want to add a few more. (thinking maybe a delay, chorus, reverb or flanger?????) Not sure....btw i love playing pj, blues etc.)

What would you add?????

Current set up....

I am open to any advice.....guitar stores around me are frustrating and dont really give the time they should!!

  • Well, one of my more inspiring investments, and an important part of a lot of mike's live sound as well, was my delay. Having a somewhat decent delay can be a lot of fun. I currently use the Boss DD-6, while it's a pretty good delay and has some really nice features, right now I'm not a big fan of its digital character. But I know there's a lot of people here who can tell you a thing or two about some of the better analog ones out there if you're more into that.
Bottom line: get a delay. :D (But that's just me...)
  • No pedal has changed the way I play guitar more than delay. So, if you're looking for something to expand horizons with, get a delay pedal (I'd start with something easy to use, like a Boss DD-7 with tap tempo). Mod pedals (chorus, phase, flange, tremolo) are fun, but really are just color for your tonal palette. Reverb is one of those things where you either need it or you don't, so if you need it, get it.

Is the Princeton a tube amp? Is it the Recording one, or the reissue '65 Reverb? Or is it a Princeton Chorus or Princeton 65?

BTW, most (but not all) players would run the Blues Driver first and the Turbo Distortion second, following the rule of gain pedals in order from least gain to most gain. That is, unless you run the BD hotter than the Turbo Dist. It really only matters if you want to cascade them (both on at the same time), and by all means do what sounds/works best for you, but the general rule of thumb is less gain first, high gain last.

My last piece of advice: It's probably time to invest in a tuner pedal. Korg Pitchblack or Boss TU-3, if not better. Plus, both of those can act as power supplies to your other pedals with a daisy-chain cable.
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.
  • As many of the people on the board know, I have too many effects!

My best advice would be a rotovibe/soul vibe. And then a delay. DD6 /DD7 are good ones if you're not sure on what you want. I have a Digitech X-Series (2 of them, actually) on my current board but the switches wear out quicker than the BOSS ones. I also have an MXR Carbon Copy analog. That's also good. The Phase 90 is essential to Mike's set up, as well.

Also, a Tuner pedal is essential, too, IMO.

I use a Princeton Recording one, sometimes. It should have reverb already built in.

  • i highly recommend the mxr carbon copy delay. it is a great pedal and like MIG said has really changed the way i play. i know BBE makes a 2 channel delay called the two timer that i always wanted until i found my carbon copy. none of my local stores had the two-timer so i got the carbon copy. a few months after i got the carbon copy they began selling the two timer....go figure...

i would also go with a reverb pedal. none of my amps have on board reverb, so i bought a holy grail and i use that pedal all of the time now. i just love the way it sounds when you are playing kind of clean with just a touch of verb on there. it really adds to it.

lastly, a tuner is essential. you can have the greatest pedal board on earth but if you can not stay in tune it is gonna sound like crap...

Great advice...(especially about the gain distortion!)

  • Just a piece of advice.. Don't buy effects until you think you have to.. No need to buy 2 just because you can.. Buy something you really want!

assuming a tuner is in place....

a phase 90 and some variant of the new EHX memory boy.
  • I don't know if I would've been into analog delay if I hadn't played digital delay first. Tap tempo makes it so easy to play with. If I was playing with a group right now, I'd probably own a Carbon Copy, but for now I'm happy with my DD-6.

i got one of those deluxe memory boys with the tap tempo and various rhythmic settings. it's nice but typical of EHX very touchy in the controls. sounds a bit brighter than a carbon copy (which i use for slap and it behaves itself a lot more) but not as crisp and nice as the good ole full size deluxe memory man. but that tap tempo is so handy and the small size is nice.
  • I am going to pick up the DD-6...not rush into two...thanks everyone for advice...I may ask for more later!!

yo truth! We must have REALLY similar setups. I also have the carbon copy delay. LOVE the sound and it is now a big part of my overall thing. The only thing I really wish for with it is...TAP TEMPO!! I wonder if its possible to mod it?

I also have the fulltone ocd, which we have both praised in the past. Do you also have a Boss Tu-3 tuner and Deluxe CLyde wah? :)

I had the EVH Phase 90, I did not like it AT ALL. Sucking noise all the time, though it said true-bypass. Sold it after not many uses at all. I would love to get some Z-Vex Fuzz.

  • yeah it sounds like our set ups are very similar. mine is very simple and is nothing too crazy. i basically have the essentials because the way i see it, if i am not going to use something, why have it taking up space on my board? space is precious. i had a rotosphere on there and was getting all kinds of noise through my cab from somewhere only to find out it was that $400 pedal that was the problem, so i got that off of there after 4 years of problems off and on... i am a big fan of amp tone, so that is why i use a matchless clubman and a '74 marshall jmp, because those things are my idea of what pure tone should sound like to my ears. i just use the pedals to color that amp tone some.

my gig setup is as follows...and i am doing this from memory so i don't recall the pedal order..
gibson les paul custom (alpine white), honeyburst les paul, blue/teal sg, and '67 strat that looks like Blackie into:

    boss tu-2 tuner
    budda wah
mr. fazedelic phaser, a boutique 2 channel phaser that sounds reall nice IMO
    fulltone ocd
zvex box of rock- my main distortion pedal, it just accents the amp some and fills out the tone some and has a clean boost for solos
    mxr carbon copy delay
    holy grail reverb
boss chorus enesmble- this takes the place of the rotosphere, not as good, but sufficient for my needs i guess

into a '74 marshall 50 watt jmp all original, no mods or a matchless clubamn, 35 watts for when i need a master volume for smaller places. at big places i will a/b both amps with matchless for clean and marshall or both of them for dirt..

i am seriously considering adding a shannon od when i have a little extra cash...

Add another Digi-delay, take the Fender Blender off, and that's my main board.

My practice set up is a SG Special (by Epiphone), Fender Frontman 25R, BOSS DS1 (stock), BOSS DS1 (moded), BOSS RV3, and BOSS BD2. and Fender Blender.

Les Paul Custom, Standard or Am. Strat>>>tu2>>>Clyde Deluxe>>>Rotovibe>>>Ibanez FL9 flanger>OCD>>>Catalinbread Ottava Magus>>>Big Muff>>>DD20>>>Egnater Rebel 20 sittin on 2 1x12 Avatar cubes with Celestion Blues or Marshal JVM 50w combo
  • I'd go with a delay too. most of my other pedals have very limited use for very specific applications. Some are relaly cool, but you could make it without it. here's my current rig
    Gibson LPC, Gibson DG335, Fender Corgan Strat, EBall Volume>VOX wah>keeleyTS808>OCD>Swollen Pickle>Boss Tremelo>Ibanex Analog Delay>Shannon Uni-Phase>Holy Grail>Radial aby>Orange AD30TC and Bad Cat Custom Shop 2x12 cub

I could get by with less than half and be more than ok. As someone previously said, don't just add stuff because you can.
What ain't a country I ever heard of. Do they speak English in what?
  • what is everyone else using currently?

Unfortunately (or not, depending on your point of view) I only play bass in a band at the moment. So my guitars mainly get used at home. So right now my board is set up for bass. If it was set up for guitar though, it would probably look something like this:

Modded Epi Les Paul/Fender "Harlekin" Strat (#1)> TU-2 > Boss CS-2 > Excalibur Tone Screamer > Big Muff > MXR Blue Box > CryBaby > EH Pulsar Tremolo > Boss DD6 > EH Holy Grail > Orange Tiny Terror > Vox 2x12

So basically I'd have to put some of the guitar pedals on there that don't get much action nowadays and rip off some of the bass effects...

And just for the record, I'm very guilty of putting stuff on my board just because I can... I've had stuff on there that was just being used during the lloud and chaotic show-outro.
  • MXR Cabon Copy is sweet. I use the Boss BD-2 (gain off and volume up) and the MXR CC through my vox and its close to NAIS.

wow, you have some nice gear. but i knew that from before. thanks for the pics, i would post some of mine but the size restrictions will not allow it. i love the 335 and have always wanted one. that was going to be my next purchase, but i can't justify the expense right now, as circumstances have changed somewhat lately. i would also like to get around to building my own pedalboard, but the furman one i have now does the trick for me for now.
