  • I take verapamil as a preventive for migraines. I have frequent and severe migraines and have tried several medications over the years to prevent them. Beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, anti seizure meds--I've done 'em all with varying results. :problem:

The one that worked best for me was Topamax, an anti seizure medication. Unfortunately, common side effects are memory loss and inability to concentrate. I felt like I'd lost my brain. :wtf: So I had to stop taking it. :(

Verapamil is a calcium channel blocker and is usually prescribed for high blood pressure. It's doing a fairly good job for me at preventing the headaches.

Is this your primary care doc who wants to prescribe them? I really had much better luck with treating my headaches after I started seeing a neurologist. Nothing against primary care docs, but I found it really helped me to see a specialist. Also, mine is on the faculty of the med school here and he's always up on the latest research.

i take several different types of meds.
