Word from the Vikings executive offices has it that Favre's teammates pulled a joke on him by hiding his favorite pair of Wranglers and making him use a treasure hunt map to find them. He got frustrated that he couldn't find them and threw a hissy fit saying he quit. At that point, his Wranglers were returned to him and he cancelled the retirement conference.
eh, bad joke I know, but it wouldn't surprise me if something like this actually happened

I remember the same thing happening a few years ago when ESPN reported Eli Manning would miss a month and the story hit the wire citing ESPN. It turned out that Manning played every game and was the Super Bowl MVP.
