So I just brought up the movie "Hype" to a couple people here on this site and they had never heard of it. I am just wondering who here has heard of it, who has seen it and what did you think? I have seen it and loved it, maybe because I am just jealous of everyone here who was not in diapers when the Seattle sound started to take off. So, to those of you have seen the movie, is it something everyone should check out or am I just one of those stupid fans who love anything that has to do with Pearl Jam?

Camden NJ night 1 6/19/2008 (one of the best days of my life!)

Music is the engine to my Imagination and Pearl Jam is the fuel for that engine.

  • I'm a fan of the movie because it really defines a particular time and place. I remember originally watching the VHS around 1996 or 1997. Then just a couple of months ago it was on my netflix queue so I watched it again. If you are a fan of PJ its a great document of that time in the band's history, seeing the MonkeyWrench radio sessions with Alice in Chains and others.

    Yup

Great documentary, and a great reminder that a LOT of the Seattle-era bands were complete crap! There's a reason why so many of them got lost in the "hype" of the grunge movement.

It's been about 10 yrs, but I've seen it. When I hook my VCR up again, maybe I'll watch again.

I remember the Monkeywrench stuff, but not much more from PJ. For some reason I remember a lot of focus on the band Tad.

  • Great movie. Megan Jasper is one of the best non-music parts of the movie. Watch her out-takes, what a crack up.

Somewhere I have the big poster for this movie.

All in all it's a very nice snapshot of the 1995-1996ish era. The best interviews are Jack Endino, Kim Thayil, and Steve Fisk.

Funny...I actually dug this video out the other day and watched it for the first time in years.

It's a really good historical document of the era and gives a good insight of what it was like to be in the eye of the hurricane of Seattle in the early 1990's.

What I found really funny watching this movie was how timeless the music of Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, and Alice in Chains sound even today.

It's a direct contrast to many of the so called "Original Seattle Bands" featured in the film who after all these years, sound painfully dated and eternally locked in the 1990's.

I know the film really tried to hammer home the point that there were alot of other bands in Seattle that the media neglected...but frankly...after watching this film for the first time in years, it's painfully obvious the reason why some bands got famous and others didn't.

    But I digress...

Anyways...I really love the clip of "Not For You" in this film as well as the comments from Eddie Vedder.

The difference between Eddie circa 1995 and Eddie 2010 is striking; especially the way he carries himself these days compared to way he did back when this interview was shot.

It's hard to imagine (Yes Yes...excuse the pun) and very easy to forget how big Pearl Jam was in 1995.

From his comments you get a real sense that he was obviously still having a very hard time coping with all the success and HYPE surrounding Pearl Jam and it's safe to say that his comments alone pretty much sum up the entire point of the film.

If you haven't watched this movie...I highly recomend it.

thank you very much for the links! First time i ever saw this and i really enjoyed it. I have never heard eddie speak so aggressively before, man he is fucking cool!!!!
  • Great film. A time capsule of Seattle music scene in the early 90's. The music is great and interviews with the Sub Pop people are interesting.

I miss my Hype! shirt that came with the purchase of the VHS tape when it came out! :(

I thought it was a great documentary. Wish there was footage from Green River & more PJ related goodies. My favorite track of that record was Mousetrap. If anybody got that copy of that live show Some Velvet Sidewalk did, would love to check it out. :)

discovered this back in 2000. Worked at a videostore, and was browsing through our documentaries section. I was doing some browsing for a school project on rock music and came upon this. Rented it, watched it, loved it.

a few years later like 2004 was at our local Hastings in college, and it was there for sale in music dvds for 10 bucks. sold! It is a great film.

I think this film will really shed light on the whole grunge argument, may not solve it, but would give quite a bit of insight on the whole thing.

Yep, remember back in about 1996 when it came out, getting it on VHS the day it was released and literally running home to watch it. I was 16. The soundtrack is great and has an awesome version of Not For You on it from Self Pollution Radio.

We never got any Hype! screenings here in Halifax. :(
