Is it worth having? Obviously it's good because of Eddie singing The Waiting, but is the rest of the DVD good?

I only know a few Petty songs and I want to become more familiar. Is this a good place to start?

I was a little weary of a 4 hr documentary, but after I watched the first two hours of this, I put the next disc in to watch it all. The doc was great. A full concert comes with this as well, which you can't go wrong with Petty live.

The doc does have Ed on a few times, but The Waiting is not the full song.

It'll give you an over-view of Tom Petty's career up to the point of time when the movie was made.

I thought it was good.

But there's a full video of Eddie singing The Waiting up on youtube. Is that not from the DVD?

This is honestly one of the best documentaries I have seen. It is long, but you get so into it I didn't even really notice it's 4 hrs.

The concert is a replica of the 2006 tour and is awesome. (saw it in Dallas).

The audio disc is ok, has like 7 songs and has honey bee, an early version of "breakdown." Can't remember the other tracks off the top of my head.

If you like band documentaries it's worth having.

I got to Meet Elliot Roberts (Neil Young's tour manager) when we saw Neil this summer. He is in it.

big names that make an appearance:
    Eddie Vedder
    Stevie Nicks
    Dave Grohl
    Elliot Robers
    Dave Stewart
    Jimmy Ivine
    Rick Ruben
    Denny Cordell

I will also add that if you want to become more familiar with Tom Petty's material: the two disc anthology "through the years" is the best place to start in terms of getting an overview of their catalog. They have recorded some albums since then so it is not completeley updated in terms of current material. It is honestly the best starting point.
If you like that I suggest
    Full moon fever
    wildflowers
    Highway companion
    in terms of full albums.
two of those are dubbed Petty solo records, but the band plays songs live off of them.

Get the video for Tom Petty not because Ed's in it. He's in it a few times, but the video is worth more than that.

Not to be less of a fan of Ed or anything...

  • I posted a very similiar thread a few days ago. I bought the DVD just this morning, and Eddie is taking a bow after the full version of The Waiting as I type this. It is under Bonus Materials on the second disc. And it is awesome. :)

    :)

ok, I need help...I just put all 3 Dvds in and cannot find bonus features. I only
get play / scene select / audio.

EDIT: I see the problem, the original release does not contain bonus features, thus the version I have does not have the full version of The Waiting.

What does that have to do with the documentary?

Great doc by the way. The 4 hours flies by. Petty has a very entertaining history.

Very wise decision. As some said, once you start watching the documentary four hours doesn't mean anything. You can't stop watching...or at least I couldn't. I think it is very interesting even if you aren't a huge Petty fan to begin with...it will probably make you one if you're not.
Plus, the concert dvd is most exceptional. All around, a great great package to have.
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow

So I finally bought the DVD. I watched the documentary about 5 days ago and it blew me away. Absolutely fascinating story about a very interesting relationship that's lasted over 30 years.

Tom comes across as a very witty, smart, grounded guy but someone who is also comfortably confident in his abilties. I didn't realise just what they'd all gone through together, from the drummer Stan leaving to the death of the bass player in 2003 (i think). Tragic stuff but some great stuff in there as well.

    I'll be watching the 30th anniversary concert tonight. I can't wait :)

In the meantime, I've grabbed all the records so I'm wandering what the general consensus is about what Petty's best work is. I understand Damn The Torpedoes is like Petty's Born To Run? The 3rd album and the one that made him a household name of sorts?

So far I've listening to Damn The Torpedoes, Southern Accents, Full Moon Fever, Into The Great Wide Open, Mojo and a little bit of Wildflowers.

    EDIT - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpG09PenZt8

That video gives me goosebumps. Especially at 4:40 when the band kicks in.

I wasn't much of a fan before watching the film, but it made me fall in love with the music instantly. After that there was a period of a few months which was just nothing but Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

This film definitely is one to make people appreciate Tom Petty and the heartbreakers. I was always a casual fan, but the film just helped me gain a whole new perspective and respect for the band. I like how it gives some history into the evils of the music business even back then, and how Tom Petty and the band fought against them and won some artists rights.
