Anyone know about PHOTOGRAPHY?

hello! I love taking pictures, and i recently upgraded my little point and shoot to a Nikon D3000 D-SLR
I got a standard 18-55mm lens with it, and a Tamron 70-300mm Lens too which is all good and im figuring out how to do bits and bobs.
the thing is, i cant find a simple online resource for tips and advice. it would be great to have some info on what other lenses i might need and what they would specifically be good for, and how to get certain effects such as a focused subject and a really out-of-focus background
anyone have any good websites, or tips even?
cheers

Also, if you want to take it up a notch, they actually have an online school (not cheap but I have friends who have done it, who said it was worth it)
