Truly a defining moment in Boston sports. Right up there with the Sox in 2004... which would be the obvious answer, but the Orr one was so special.

I'll have to confirm and edit the details, but from memory alone,

1980 Phillies vs. Cubs one regular season game at Chicago.

I think it went 24 innings or 30 innings. I think the score was high too.

They even "named" the game too.

I listed to Harry Kalas(sp?) and oh, what's his name...damn. will look up AH, Richie Ashburn,
who announced the game on the radio. I listened to the whole damn game. I was 12.

I listened to every Phillies game on the radio that year that wasn't televised. Good thing too, because the Phils WON the world series that year solely because of my support. (beat Kansas City Royals)

Lets see, 1980 Phillies from 1st to 3rd, left to right

Pete Rose, Manny Trillo, Larry Bowa, Mike Schmidt, Greg Lazinski, Gary Maddox, Bake McBride, Tim McCarver (c), Steve Carlton one pitcher, Tug McGraw one relief pitcher.

    Bob Boone was the catcher

I think the game you were talking about happened in the late 70's. Phils won something like 25-24. I believe schmidt hit 3 HRs that day.

... in the rugby league grand final against the manly seaeagles, south sydney captain john sattler broke his jaw but continued playing to lead the rabbitohs to their 19th premiership. one of the toughest, feared and most respected men ever to play the game sattler wasnt going to let a little thing like a broken jaw stop him leading by example. the break came in the 10th minute of game as the result of an off the ball punch in the face. sattler pleaded to teammate Mike Cleary to Hold me up so they don't know I'm hurt. the player responsible, john bucknall came in for some extra attention from the south sydney pack as they stepped up to dominate the game, hardly calling on their backline. he was replaced 35 minutes into the game after a particularly heavy tackle that saw his shoulder injured. the sea eagles never crossed the rabbitohs line that day and lost the game 12-23. BOOYAH!!!

You beat me to it unlost. Truly an iconic moment in Boston sports.

    I'll nominate a few:

When it seemed all hope was lost...faith was rewarded. I am full of emotion watching that. 2004 was special on so many levels for my father and I. There's a whole story behind it, which I won't bore you with, but it was one of the most emotional times in my life.

  • Sorry guys, here are the three greatest moments in sports...

This series was this close to being over, until....
    http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/watch?v ... re=related

    This game was OVER, until....
    http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/watch?v=Mav2iBA1cwo

The Dodgers were HUGE underdogs until...
    http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea ... d=48828485

I remember EXACTLY were I was for all three, though the 1988 one is a little fuzzy, I was only 8 years old.
  • Sorry but the Bobby Orr goal strikes me as an all-time overrated moment. They were in the process of sweeping a mediocre expansion team that did nothing but beat other expansion teams to get to the Finals. It was a stupid system and probably a miracle that St. Louis even got the game to overtime. So Orr got tripped and flew through the air and it became iconic, but I still say there was no way they weren't gonna win the Cup anyway at that point.

Now here's an OT goal that actually meant something:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Kbg_1Y7saA

Flyers needed a road win in that series and that's how they got it.

Gary Valk scores in OT against the Pens to advance the Leafs to the conference finals in 1999. It has always been one of my favourites, simply because of Markov's Jagr salute at the end. :) Boy, was Jagr especially annoying that season. :)

You have to hear this though, it's funny as shit.

So last year I think it was, Bryon Russell actually challenged MJ to a one-on-one match here in Utah at some college gym or rec. center or somthing. MJ caught word of this and was like, "Are you kidding me? Uh, no. I have better things to do."

So, because of all the pressure of this one-on-one match, and all the tickets sold and hype built-up, Russell actually hired an imposter. When he came out, people starting booing and throwing shit at Russell.

I believe you are right. I know it was pretty far north of Salt Lake. Close to Ogden, which I believe is where our D-League team resides.
