the ties that bind

she sat there on the porch
with a cold drink in her heavy hand
and the breeze felt new on her skin
the song played and reminded her of him
“thanks fucker”
she said to herself
trying desperately to let the past be the past
and let the sun penetrate her heart
she felt as if she were sinking
and felt “the knot”
which by now, had become
like an old friend
only dropping in on “the bad days”
she tried so hard to forget
so hard to untangle the past
“it takes time” she said to herself
and looked south, staring off into the blue sky.
356 miles away,
he sat alone thinking of better times
the song that played made him feel,…... was it shame?
he thought of her sweet face
and light blue eyes
and unfortunately,
he thought of her tangled web of deceit, and outright lies
had it been years?
“where does the time go”
he said to no one
if only he could go back
say the right thing
do the right thing
and keep her home
where he still felt she belonged
the walls still echoed her laughter,
at one of his stupid jokes that she had heard a thousand times
if only he could un-tie the knots left behind
“it takes time” he said to himself
and looked north, staring off into the blue sky.
356 miles apart,
the past,…. a tortured pile of knots,…
waiting to be un-tied
356 miles apart,
yet it’s the ties that bind.
