If you like Blind Melon.......

........you'll dig this Winnipeg band The New Meanies. They were called the Blue Meanies until they found out there was another band down in the US with the same name, so they changed it after their first album and then signed with Virgin Records. Their live show kills. They toured major arenas supporting DMB at the time. They only play sparsely these days, as the lead singer is now the drummer of the band Nathan, but they play the odd show here and there. Usually local.
I was listening to their most recent album, Highways, and realized how similar they are to Blind Melon (w/Hoon). They had a few hit singles on Canadian radio and their videos did very well on MuchMusic (Canadian MTV). Letting Time Pass, I'm On Fire, and Three Seeds, all from the album Three Seeds, is what put them on the map. I urge you to check them out. You may have even heard of them, as they were quite popular on US radio at the time as well.
And no, I'm not ONLY plugging Winnipeg bands lately, I'm just personally rediscovering them myself and realizing what a thirving scene we had back in the 90's. Like our own little Seattle revolution. It was good times to be sure.
