What would you think of an experimental approach to the new album?

I've been saying for years that it would SO incredible if Pearl Jam was to record a truly experimental album, with songs in the same vein as "Sleight of Hand", "Of the Girl", songs like that. Long instrumental parts, different guitar effects, unconventional bass lines, etc.

An album that pushes the 80-minute CD limit, with a handful of sprawling 7-10 minute epics. Even if they tried it and failed, at least they would have tried it. When I got to the end of the last album and it ended with "Inside Job", they really added fuel to this fire in my mind.

What do y'all think of this?

My feelings on this are decidedly split.

On one hand they've always shown great promise in developing moody and atmospheric songs (Indifference, NAIS, Master/Slave, Inside Job, etc...) that could be expanded into a full album. On the other hand whenever they produce an album or a majority of songs that are more down tempo overall (Riot Act) I'm left feeling really dissatisfied because what I'm really after is another album where every song could be a single. I know they're not out to make albums like this, but that's the potential they showed when they laid down the best debut album by a rock band since Led Zeppelin I.

Just my opinion, but you can't go wrong with a solid rock album like Ten or Vitalogy.

  • I feel No Code is an experimental album in many ways. And since it's my favorite, and because I love 10 minute songs, I am all for it!
  • I just want something OTHER than the Super Delux Edition of "TEN" SOON!!!! Little bit o'this and a little bit o'that...although by reading the alleged song list it looks like it will be a mix, quite the variety I do think we're in store for...

Giving permission for TEN to be on RockBand, re-issuing the first album are signs that they don't mind a bit of a spotlight nowadays. And that tells me releasing an "experimental" album does not bode with that idea if you look at it from the financial standpoint.

Long songs are great, they really are. Take Tool for instance. A lot of long songs, RIGHT!!!! Great songs as well, but come concert time only a few songs are played. Makes it seem like a short show.
