I only recently got in to them, have Rubber Factory and it's really good, I've heard some of their album produced by Danger Mouse and it sounded really good which I suppose was a different direction at the time, I saw them live last month, and they were awesome, maybe falling into the category of a band that sounds even better live, there's a southern rock sound to them live. Haven't heard the new record but I think since they're getting popular people will say it sucked and they sold out soon as if alot of people like or hear something it must suck.
  • all their stuff is pretty good
    my fav is probly thickfreakness
another real good one is magic potion
best thing about them so far is that they havent really "caught on" yet with the masses
minimal production on the cd's so they've still got that garagey sound...good stuff
and for only two guys in the band...they're pretty bad ass!!

  • This is a party I was late getting too but this band kicks ass. It's funny...I'm going to see KoL on the 20th largely because I want to see the Keys and won't have a chance otherwise.
I started with Attack and Release, the one produced by Danger Mouse, and loved it. Still do. But, I actually prefer their earlier stuff like Rubber Factory (my favorite), Magic Potion and Thickfreakness. Thos albums, especially Thickfreakness and Rubber Factory are some damn raunchy (as I like to call it) rocking blues albums. Fantastic!
So, yes, like with KoL you definitely need to dig into their back catalogue. They also have a couple of dvds out that are exceptional. As far as Brothers goes, I like it a lot more than I did when I first listened. In the beginning, I felt like they abandoned the raunchiness a bit too much, but the more I've listened I find it to be a nice change of pace.
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow

They say every sin is deadly but I believe they may be wrong...I'm guilty of all seven and I don't feel too bad at all

The one's I recommend for new listeners are: Thickfreakness and Magic Potion then just buy them all after that.
    The keys kick ass.
  • I think The Black Keys are outstanding, I would buy all thier albums including their first "The Big Come Up" and also do not forget about the EP they released "Chulahoma" as it is really a tribute record to who was one of their main influences.....the blues artist 'Junior Kimbrough'; and yes you should also check out Junior Kimbrough as well.

Blakroc is also interesting as well...hip-hop artists alongside the Black Keys; different but good.
  • I agree with everyone in recommending Thickfreakness, Rubber Factory and Magic Potion. The Big Come Up is good too, but not my favorite. It's funny, I applauded the change of direction they took with Attack & Release, even though it's probably my least favorite of their albums. But with Brothers, I feel they knocked it out of the park. That album sounds like what I wanted Attack & Release to sound like. So soulful and textured. It definitely lacks some of the rough edges of their earlier work, but is still incredible. I think Sinister Kid is one of the funkiest things I've ever heard. The Go Getter is also a really cool groove/life gone wrong song.

Agreed, both are great for starters, but you really can't go wrong with any one of their albums. Dan and Pat are just solid all around, and they put on a fan-fucking-tastic live show. Saw them in DC back in July and they blew the roof off the place.

  • black keys opening for kol? should be the other way around imho.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

I bought Magic Potion, not really knowing anything about them, pretty much so I could get a free BK t-shirt :D I dug it, then bought Attack & Release which i liked a lot. I got Rubber Factory for Christmas a year or two ago, another great album. I still need Thickfreakness.

Just started listening to them a few weeks ago (why didn't anyone tell me there was anything like this out there?!), and they blew me away.
