Let's Talk Binaural & Light Years

Holy motherballs batman!

I haven't just LISTENED to an album while doing nothing else--not even drive--in a long time.

What's up with this album? I was reading about binaural recordings, and the album seems to produce what I can best describe as an auditory path of music from left to right. Its more than just "in stereo". Its as if there are 10 or 11 different & distinct sources of sound that are spread & spaced out in this "path of music"

And they include so many sounds. During one song, I hear a "ting" just once & not again in the song or album. Its so varied its nutso.

And I had no idea the song light years was THAT awesome. It was always "background". I listened to the words for the first time the other day, and it was killing me so much.

I feared myself dead.

But its ok, I lived to tell about it.

Wow...The first time I heard the opening drums and guitar of Light Years that became one of my "go-to" Binuaral songs. I'm really digging Insignificance lately, especially any live version.
  • great song....its amazing live and fafter that is NAIS...
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
    "..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”

    LOL
Dalai Lama—To say that humility is an essential ingredient in our pursuit of spiritual transformation may seem to be at odds with what I have said about the need for confidence. But there is clearly a distinction to be made between valid confidence or self-esteem, and conceit - which we can describe as an inflated sense of importance, grounded in a false image of self.
  • i bought this album just after it came out, in early 2000, and, unlike their previous works, just couldn't get into it. when i went to see them perform in August of that year, i didn't really know the songs. the whole flow of Binaural was just different from everything they've done to that point. i don't know what it was. now, i listen to Binaural often, with all its crunch and "dirty" sounds, having been given a chance to make their proper journey throughout my head, which has taken several light years. i love it!

I've read reviews for their work as a whole stating that Binaural and Riot Act were not as good as what they usually do.

    Couldn't believe it !!

Yet I guess it's because it's harder to get into those two albums really.

Binaural definately benefits from the time you take to listen to it from beginning to end, without interruption and without doing anything else meanwhile. It is so dense, with sounds coming from everywhere ! It does feel like a journey indeed.

Then you can't help wondering : how could have I missed that in the first place ?
  • I get sad.. listening to Binaural
  • Like many of us, I never gave Binaural a chance. After I saw them in Indy and they played "Insignificance", I thought I should give it a go. Most underrated PJ album. For the most part, I think that fans get it, but the critics don't. Binaural was an album of musical and lyrical artistry. Trying to get it on Vinyl, but it goes for $250
I got some if you need it.

  • Binaural is amazing,
the moods of that album, so intense, atmospheric, eerie yet beautiful

    i love it

I've listened to Binaural a lot more lately than I have in many many years. I think a handful of songs on there are some of their best ever (Insignificance, NAIS, Light Years, Thin Air, Grievance). The only songs on the album I never got into were God's Dice and Evacuation.

The sound of the album is amazing, but others are correct it doesn't strike you at first, it takes many listens to it and then you really enjoy everything they put into it. I think I'll listen to it again today while I'm working. :P

It's the perfect PJ album to listen to early in the morning, on your commute to work, when your really hungover.

Those are the money lines. Basically says, make the most of your time together, kids, because there will come a day when at least one of you will be dead.

And you will regret the time you didn't take advantage of.
