First Time to DC

FlaggFlagg Posts: 5,856
I had a class scheduled in Chicago that got shifted to DC at the last minute. So, going there for a couple of days tomorrow.

I've never been there.

So, outside of taking pictures of the White House, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol building, is there anything else that is a must see??

I am only going to have Monday afternoon and evening and Tuesday evening free. Working the rest of the time.

Well I would say maybe a Nationals game (if you are a baseball fan) but apparently they are away those days.

    Definitely hit up Smithsonian though.

Arlington National Cemetary, which is just across the river, but still basically DC

There is nothing on the map or signposts which indicate where the dead are buried from
    the recent Iraq/Afghanistan "war".

We had to specifically ask where this was (last summer).

Turns out at that time, they were burying 8 or 9 young men/women A DAY there, including one funeral that was taking place right when we were there.

So sad and eye-opening. So sad the ages on the burial markers. Even sadder was looking at the as-of-yet unused land in the cemetary.....

I love the natural history and the air and space museums. The national archives is pretty interesting too. Take a tour if you have some time kill. Most of them get you to the big hot-spots.

DC is a very cool city. I was just there for the first time in my life a couple of weeks ago for a conference, We took the Friday off (should have been at the conference, but oh well) to visit some of the monuments and take some pictures.
I recommend the Smithsonian, just do a little planning and see which one of the musuems you would like to visit. We went to the natural history one and spent 1/2 the day there and the rest of the time we cjecked out the monumnets. The bonus is that all that stuff is located generally together, you don't have to drive all over the city, you can walk or rent a Segway.
I will say I came away from the city very impressed. Definately didn't have enough time to check everything out and would love to go back and visit sometime in the future.

Since time is a restriction, you'll have to prioritize. There is the Smithsonian, but it can takes day to see it all. And across the bridge in Virginia, there is Mount Vernon, where you can see George Washington's home and both his and Marth's crypts.
There also is The Kennedy Space Museum.
And the Vietnam Wall, which also has the memorials for the other wars.
    Save room for dessert!

When i was there i went to the national mall and saw big abe, the vietnam wall, world war II memorial, the washington monument, and the white house.

Then i went to the smithsonian air and space museum which was awesome. If i had more time i woudl have hit up more smithsonian's but i was short on time.

OK, I only had Monday afternoon and evening, Tuesday evening and a few minutes Wednesday. So I hit the following:

    White House
    Washington Monument
    WWII Memorial
    Vietnam Memorial
    Vietnam Women's Memorial
    Lincoln Memorial
    Capitol Building
    Jefferson Memorial

That's all I could fit in.

Walked around as much as possible and tried some local bars/restaurants.

I wish I had more time. Would like to go back one day. I was alone so that made it easy to move around quickly but it would have been nice to have the family see it. Very cool.

A couple of striking things: the squatty buildings. No sky-scrapers. I assume this has something to do with the Capitol? Also, the homeless. I have never seen so many homeless lying around. Incredibly sad. But makes me wonder, are there no homeless shelters around? Or are there no city ordinances? In Dallas, we have just as big a homeless problem as any other big city, but they aren't allowed to sleep all over the streets and parks and everywhere, although many do. I don't know, maybe I just don't see them, but it seemed to be a huge issue in DC.
