Silence of the Lambs wins Best Picture but Goodfellas didn't

I am shocked at that! These two films are a year apart so they didn't run against each other in the same Academy Awards show. I finally saw Silence of the Lambs tonight and I can't believe that won Best Picture. I thought it was a great movie but I'm shocked a movie like this won the Best Picture but Goodfellas was snubbed the year before. Gotta love the Academy Awards! (sarcastic tone, of course)

it also won best actor, best actress, best director, and best adapted screenplay.

imo brian cox, who originated the role of lector(in the original red dragon) does a better job than hopkins.

  • What year is it?

I bet in 1990 somebody suddenly freaked out about things that happened in 1970 too.

OK, I love Shawshank and Pulp Fiction, but it was Forrest Gump, come on. That was fair.

I honestly think that the votes were split in this case and FG won by default. That was a pretty amazing year and yeah, I love all three movies too :D

This about sums it up. Though, I think this dude was born when both these movies came out, as well as when some band came to prominence...God damn. I'm not even old, and now I feel old. Shit. Can't you like Justin Bieber or some shit and make me feel better about myself?

Forrest Gump win doesn't bother me, all 3 are EXCELLENT movies.
I absolutely love A Beautiful Mind, so that really doesn't bother me either.

I still don't get the fascination with TItanic though... it was a decent movie, but definitely not a great one.

And as far as the original post... I love Goodfellas.... I've probably watched that more than almost any other movie, but Silence of the Lambs was soooo good when it came out, and different.

    Here is 1991:

    Goodfellas
    Dances With Wolves
    Awakenings
    Ghost
    The Godfather III

    Winner: Dances With Wolves

    1992:

    Silence of the Lambs
    Beauty and the Beast
    Bugsy
    JFK
    The Prince of Tides

    Winner: Silence of the Lambs

    Here's a huge snub from 1981:

    Ordinary People
    Raging Bull
    Coal Miner's Daughter
    Tess
    The Elephant Man

    Winner: Ordinary People

How many people are talking about Ordinary People today? A lot of people talk about Raging Bull. Raging Bull deserved the award.

I actually really liked Ordinary People
  • Ghost was nominated??? :? That movie was terrible. No offense to Swayze since he has passed away but besides The Outsiders I am not sure I ever enjoyed a movie he was in.

Also in the late 90s Hollywood was sort of over Hanks & Spielberg, and pretty much everyone had a huge boner for Harvey Weinstein. Which also explains Gwyneth's somewhat premature Oscar win that year. (Not that I don't like Gwyneth, just think Cate Blanchett was robbed that year.)

Well Speilberg did win best director for SPR, they just didn't give him best picture. Which makes no sense whatsoever....

not a big tom hanks fan. though i love BIG and liked him a lot in road to perdition. anything else i can pretty much leave.
