Okay, I haven't had time to actually read (or listen to) this story yet, but it looks interesting:

  • meh... e-mail forwards, blogs, and right wing radio talking points about the bill are so much more entertaining than mudane facts.

I prefer to believe that Obama, flanked by his socialist private army of brownshirts and Elliot Ness-type armed IRS agents, is going to go room-to-room at hospitals, implanting every patient with microchip, and pulling the plug on elderly ones.

Apart from the absurdity of that lady's sign... I have to say, its refreshing to see a placard so aesthetically pleasing... Especially given the evident intelligence level of the bearer (though to be fair I shouldn't judge their intelligence level I guess, just their guillable-ness [is that a word?] and lack of being properly informed).

I was just wondering what the rest of the non-american board members think of the whole health care thing in the US...

From my point of view, our healthcare system needs a major overhaul (Canada/B.C. in general), but its still a step ahead of any privatized system - and I'd bet you could ask 10 other Canadians and 8 of them would say the same. I mean, there are a handful of other systems in the world that we should set as our goal to compete with... Americans think that Obama is somehow trying to screw them over in healthcare is just weird to me, spend some time in British Columbia and you'll learn our Premier is fucking over our healthcare like no other - and he's trying to do the opposite of what Obama is.

So is it the same feeling with people from other countries, that we're looking inside this bubble that is the USA, and watching in disbelief what people are doing to oppose healthcare? Does anyone else laugh at the misconceptions (even though when you think of it its not funny for Americans) people have and all the B.S. they buy into?

Here's a little anecdote about the state of our current, private system that people are so desperately clinging to: I have a co-worker who was in a really bad car accident and was out for a few months. She was hospitalized and presumably got acceptable care right after the accident and I don't know the details of how all that went down for her. She's back to work now but still not completely better. So yesterday she comes into my office asking if I have any ibuprofen because she's in a lot of pain. And she tells me this pain has been happening for about a week and she needs to see a specialist. But she called for an appointment and the soonest appointment available is in February. FEBRUARY. That's FIVE MONTHS away. She has really great insurance and this is the best she can get. And people want to hold on to this system for fear they won't otherwise get timely care?? :? We're not getting timely care now! :x

ETA: Sorry - perhaps that's not 100% relevant to this thread.

i had a friend who 2 weeks ago fell down and landed on her side and had a spontaneously collapsed lung. she was hospitalized for 4 days while they do all sorts of testing on her. the funny thing is any nurse. MD, or athletic trainer or any other allied health care professional should be able to tell she had a collapsed lung with only a stethescope and about 45 seconds of time....if if had been diagnosed quickly enough it would have taked a simple procedure of inserting a needle into the lung for it to return to normal. but since it took so long for them to make the diagnosis she needed a chest tube for a day and a half....she got her first round of bills on wednesday....$12, 000. 00.....now she is going to have to sell her motorcycle, her most prized posession other than her son, to pay for it....nice fucking health care system we have here...

there was a thread a few weeks ago that shows the US ranks 26th in the world when it comes down to health. look at the countries above them who scored so much better, and how many of those countries have universal health care.

again, it's not much good that the US has the best facilities and doctors in the world, if the people don't have access to them in a timely and affordable manner.

Isn't that outrageous considering how highly we think of ourselves and our current system?? I'd like to know how people who are in favor of the status quo justify their opinions in light of this information.
