Does Eddie know how to pronounce Jeff's last name?

So I'm sure this has come up before, but I've been making my way through the European bootlegs and still, after all these years, Eddie will be introducing the band at the end of the show and get to Jeff and say "Jeff Uh-ment" pause for a second and then say "A-ment". It's like he either got the evil eye from Jeff or just says it both ways for whatever reason.

I openly realize that this is a stupid thing to discuss, but I just find it odd that throughout 20 years Eddie has never been consistent on this.

I was thinking about making a thread like this 20 minutes ago, I shit you not! lol

    Is it Uh-ment, or A-ment.

    Is it Guh-sard or Gaw-serd?

I would think that "A-ment" and "Gaw-sard" are correct.

Listen to PJ radio. Jeff has a spot where he pronounces his name. And he says "A-ment" and then repeats it clearly as Ament.

I was just going to say that! He says "pronounced A-ment" in the spot
  • So then I guess it's safe to say it's just an ongoing joke that refuses to die.

Most likely. He does say A-ment sometimes, but uh-ment most of the time.

But is he being serious, or having fun with it?

I thought in the spot he was being funny because probably for his whole life before he was famous everyone mispronounced it... and they probably still do with some regularity.

    And with a Boston accents:
    It's Jeffament.
    It's not Vedder, it's Ved-dah.
And it's not Goss-ard, it's Gossid. One syllable, no ah.

So then I guess it's safe to say it's just an ongoing joke that refuses to die.

That's how I always figured it to be.

You'd think around...oh I don't know...91 or so, Jeff would have been like "Hey Ed, you're pronouncing my last name wrong". :D

Who knows, maybe once Jeff said that Ed was like "Fuck you Jeff, you're lucky I even mention your name! Dave is gone first and if you keep lipping off, you're next!"
  • I remember hearing Jeff on the redio a few years ago where the interviewer pronounced it AH-ment, and Jeff was deeply impressed that he had gotten it right, since "our singer doesn't even know how to say it" (or something to that effect).

Ed either says ah-MENT, or AY-ment, but never AH-ment, which is how I've heard Jeff say it's pronounced.

    and yet... http://inogolo.com/query.php?qstr=Ament&key=1

And while I was looking for a pronunciation, I discovered that
    1) Ament is the Egyptian goddess of Underworld hospitality, "the meet-and-greet deity who welcomes deceased spirits at the gates of the Underworld" (so the Egyptian St Peter, then...),

    but also that

    2) an ament is a pychiatric term for "a person with severely deficient intellectual capacity."
