seems to be especially prevelent in hip hop- jay z, lil wayne, the dream, ti, mos def, aesop rock, eminem, dr dre, big boi,

but also extends to rock-the edge, bono, slash.

my question is, do you think friends of these musicians refer to their friends using those stage names? When Elton John checks up on Marshall Mathers, does he says "oh hi em"? if you are a friend of bono, do you call him that, or do you call him Paul? Does Jay-z go by Jay or Sean?

I've always thought stage names were kind of silly. Why can't people embrace who they are and not be embarrassed by their given names. I understand some of these stage names are nicknames they had as kids that just sort of stuck, but a lot of musicians and actors change their name because they're afraid of sounding too ethnic or their name is hard to pronounce or spell. Who cares!

i dont think theyre embarassed.. i think a lot of peeps like to separate their 'real' selves from their performing self. you know like hes eminem on stage but at home hes just marshall.

    i have a pen name. 8-)
    hear my name
    take a good look
    this could be the day
    hold my hand
    lie beside me
    i just need to say
  • There's also a security measure involved.

say your stage name is Tom Jones, but your real name is Ron Smith.

Someone comes up to you and says Tom Jones, I'm your 3rd cousin on your dad's side, I'm going through some rough times and was wondering if I could borrow $1000 bucks from you seeing as we're family and all.

    You know it's BS.

I suppose it would depend on if they like their first name or not, if the person has legally changed their name to the stage name or not. Good example is Tara Leigh Patrick, Prince told her she needed to change her name to become a 'star', and gave her the name 'Carmen Electra'. Dave Navarro has CE tattooed on his stomach....guess 'TP' would look funny.

Authors are also known for this...Samuel Clemens is better known as Mark Twain.

  • Tom Jones is a stage name?

  • Well let's ask Eddie Severson about this...

(yes I know he didn't change it to sound better, but I wouldn't count out someone changing it to be disassociated with THEIR family)

Funny you chose Elton John, because that's a stage name as well. I think a lot more musicans and actors use stage names than people realize, because most of the fictional names are "proper" names.
