Been spinning this record again the past few days!! I reckon I have been enjoying this record for about 21 years now - liked it age 17 and love it even more aged 38!!

I have this theory (probably stated earlier in the thread) that if punk hadn't happened, a lot more music would have developed from where Physical Graffiti got to - I think it's a high point!

What I would love for the next Pearl Jam album is for the band to ONLY listen to Physical Graffitti when they are writing songs and rehearsing (OR RECORDING IT!) , and to see what comes out - I bet the result would be epic!

Here's hoping that Pearl Jam make an album which picks up where Physical Graffitti left off..... ;)

Gotta listen to this on the way home. The Rover might be the most underrated Led Zep song.

Yeah it's a brilliant song. So many epic songs on that record - Kashmir, In my Time of Dying, Houses of the Holy, In the Light, Down by the Seaside..... did I say Kashmir? ;)

Goddam - where's my time machine?

I saw Page/Plant twice in the 90s- absolutely spectacular. '95 in the Spectrum - 3 days of ears ringing after that. :mrgreen:8-)

The best thing about those vids was that the costumes were almost as legendary as the playing!

just "discovered" led zeppelin, started listening to them earlier this year, been listening to Led Zeppelin II and IV a lot, over and over. love them, literally the music was so great, so amazing that I had to stop what I was doing and listen.
Only listened to those two but will definitely be listening to the rest, was going to go with the first album (do things chronologically)
but i might just listen to Physical Graffiti now :)

Either way it'll be fine, but I'd say grab I and III(also posted this in the Radiohead thread) first. Houses of the Holy and Physical Graf are the perfect balance of the roots of Zeppelin along with pushing their boundaries.

Yup, every Led Zep album is great (actually a huge understatement), except Coda is just kind of good. All you really need from Coda is Wearing and Tearing, actually. But that was just a posthumous collection of leftovers; not a bona fide Led Zep album.

I wouldn't say In Through the Out Door is great, IMO. You can tell it was the end for them, with Page and Bonham partying through most of the sessions and Page during his heroin days.

    Presence is vastly underrated.

Some of Bohnams best work on In Through The Outdoor. I'm Gonna Crawl is EPIC!!!

    Presence is my favorite.

But Physical Graffitti is my desert island album, have to go with the double lp.

I'm sure he doesn't mean ever. He has great musical tastes IMO but some of Bohnam's best stuff is on ITTOD also IMO.

    Amazing

Is it true that Page plays this 'live' without any overdubs etc? I think I remember hearing that. Doesn't seem possible..... It sounds like there are about 3 guitars there

It could be very fast picking.

I doubt there are many people on the planet who could get sounds like that out of a single guitar - but Jimmy Page is probably one of them!! I'm not much of a musician, more of a listener - so I'm not really qualified to say how this is played. Even more impressive if he's playing it all in one go. Beautiful amazing tune....

One acoustic guitar in CACGCE tuning...The things he did with finger and hybrid picking are just a real pain in the ass for us mere mortals. He's probably made as many people hang up a guitar as pick one up.

On a somewhat related, but opposite note.....Ten Years Gone....Sooooooo many guitars.....Anybody else ever heard "All That Glitters Is Gold" outtakes collection?

Ten Years Gone electric demo>> There's a track by track "breakdown" for the second guitar solo comin out of the heavy part(do you ever really need somebody)....You get to hear Page layin it down track by track, then stopping and rewinding, then doin the next part.

    Simply fucking amazing!!!!

Wow - that is kind of mind blowing. Led Zep were a band of four absolute virtuosos - there's not many bands that can compete with them on that front I don't think.

Was interested to read about Ten Years Gone - might have to check out that demo!

    Thanks

  • It's kinda like Zep's White Album. Not just because of the two disc factor, but both albums explore a variety genres, feature some of their all-time best work, and feature some songs that, while awesome, some would argue are b-sides at best. As far as those type of songs, my favorite on Physical Graffiti is far and away "Boogie With Stu". Fuckin' love it. And for you trivia buffs, "Stu" is the only Zeppelin song that Robert Plant plays guitar on (Page plays the mandolin on this).

Yeah I think if it wasn't for the hard hitters - some of the other material wouldn't stand up - but I find placed alongside such intense magical stuff - the lighter songs work really well. Definitely my favourite Led Zep album overall - some of the sounds on this record are like nothing on earth!
