Wilco.. (The Thread)

I just finished watching "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" and it has totally jump started my interest in Wilco again. I have always been a casual fan, having albums like YHF, Summerteeth, and Wilco the Album. I saw them open for Neil Young, that's what got me started but I would like to dig deeper. I bought a for records on vinyl and saw one in the store "Being There" but I didn't pick it up, wasn't sure about their older stuff. So does anyone have some advice or suggestions that will help me discover more of this great band?

i personally don't think that you can go wrong with any of their albums. they're a great band, in my opinion. i would maybe suggest getting some live recordings...Kicking Television is a great place to start. there are a ton of great audience boots out there, though. enjoy!
    I LOVE MUSIC.

  • I agree with MFC, pick up Kicking Television

  • It really depends on which (of the many) era(s) of Wilco you presently like and which one(s) you might want to get to. I started off as a fan of Uncle Tupelo (Wilco's predecessor) and hence, really enjoy the No Depression genre that was typified by Uncle Tupelo, the first two Wilco albums and most importantly, by the entire discography of Son Volt (Wilco's estranged half brother from Uncle Tupelo).
I do not recommend Kicking Television as a good starting point for live Wilco; in fact, I would go further and ask you to pick up their recent DVD Ashes of American Flags which is a great testament to their current live lineup. The DVD that comes with the Sky Blue Sky album is great too, with live studio rehearsal versions of the Sky BLue Sky songs.
Personally, Being There and A.M. are my favourites from Wilco, but only because I was exposed to the Americana and No Depression genre longer than their current deconstructive style of music.
Oh, and remember to take all of this with a pinch of salt, as I am an avowed extreme death metal, technical death metal and brutal death metal fan, and have been for 25 odd years. Wilco is what I listen to when I relax after having my mind blown open by Entombed's classic Clandestine album - you should try it sometime!

    +1

"Being There" is great. It's still probably my favorite Wilco record after all these years.

This is "The" Wilco thread although i think you should have title it "Wilco... The Thread" but that is just me. :D
I love each of their albums for what they are.

Nels cline is their guitarist on Wilco (the album), sky blue sky, & Kicking Television live disc. He adds a lot to the band sonically. If you liked his leads on Wilco the Album he has some great songs on Sky blue Sky that you need to hear.

the early stuff like AM & Being There i love too. Espcially Being There that album has some of their most fun live songs like misunderstood, monday, outta sight outta mind.

You are gonna wanna check it all out because it is all awesome. AM might be the hardest one to get into if thta alt country sound is not your thing.

Yeah I was totally thinking this should be "Wilco (the thread)" but anyways, let me just echo what others have stated that you can do no wrong when it comes to Wilco. They are pretty much my second favorite band that rivals Pearl Jam when it comes to the live experience. They never play the same show twice and you will leave ridiculously satisfied when it's over.

I honestly prefer the Jay Bennett era of studio albums even though the current lineup (which has been the most stable in the group's history) blows that era away live. I think that the run of Being There, Summerteeth, and YHF might be one of the best three album runs in the history of recorded music.
  • Changed the title, your right sounds better.
I just got "Being There" and I am loving it, only a few listens so far but great.

    I love Wilco.

    Especially A Ghost is Born.

The song "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" just blows me away every time I give it a listen

Agreed. I always think of how much less sedated A Ghost Is Born would've sounded if they had Nels. Spiders, in particular, soars live.

My Wilco tastes change regularly depending on my mood. They also have many, many side projects - the Mermaid Ave. discs, Loose Fur, Autumn Defense, Nels Cline Singers, Tweedy going solo, etc. - that are all over the map musically, and worth exploring. I went to their Solid Sound Festival a few weeks ago, and got to see many of them. They're talking about doing the festival again next year. I highly recommend it.

    Summerteeth is my favorite.
  • I've been listening a lot to AM, Being There and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I have been really enjoying some of their rockers like "Casino Queen,I Got You, and Heavy Metal Drummer", any other suggestions of some favorite Wilco tunes?
  • Via Chicago live is mindblowing.
