I don't own any of their albums, but they put on a good live show. Not a fan of Creed at all - and these guys don't sound anything like them - but they often get lumped together because they are pretty much Creed without Scott Stapp. Glad to hear they are back together and touring again. Do you have any tour dates for them?

Got my tickets for the Hammersmith show, there's about 15 of us going!

Can't wait for the new record, apparently Myles pulls out some really epic vocal performances, it's gonna be immense!!

P.s Both albums are great, I have a soft spot for their first one One Day Remains, purely because I hadn't heard a singer with that kind of vocal talent in a very long time. Blackbird has a couple of filler tracks in my opinion, but that aint bad out of 13 songs

They sound quite a bit like Creed. I mean, how could they not. Not like Stapp was adding anything to them musically. The only differences I hear are tasteless guitar solos, and a pretty good singer that uses it in a pretty bad way.

They're a lot heavier than Creed:

I've heard them, both albums in their entirety. Every song has a mellow Creed part then Tremonti assumes douchy rock star stance and lays down some guitar exercises.

Uh huh, I see. I don't hear that at all. Sure it's unashamedly melodic, but that in itself is not a bad thing in my book. Creed minus Scott Stapp would be plain old inoffensive meat and potatoes rock.

How is Tremonti playing a long solo any different to Mike McCready playing a long solo? And he's hardly the first guitarist to pull funny faces and rock star moves now is he?

Anyway, the biggest draw for me is Myles Kennedy, it's nice to hear a singer who can replicate what they do on cd live.

Unashamedly melodic??? That's a fuckin laugh.

Tremonti's playing solo's?? When? All I hear are warmups. He has absolutely no feel and horrible tone. Sure, he's not the first to pose, but he does it in the most cliched ways possible, and he often gets this look of "oh yeah, what I'm playing is amazing" when he breaks into some sweep pick run.

In the same way that plenty of bands aren't ashamed to write melodic music - Pearl Jam included.

More cliched than playing a guitar solo behind your head?! ;) Who gives a shit what he looks like when he's playing? His solo in the song Blackbird is full of feeling.

great band...though i think its safe to assume that they are going to be hated on just because of creed... atleast myles can actually spell, doesnt sound like a vedder wannabe, and has some serious pipes...but everyone is entitled to their opinion....to quote chris robinson....opinions are like assholes everyone has them :D..but in response to the first post i think they are good and can't wait to hear the new album

so true. i saw them with my roommate because he loves them. mark tremonti's guitar playing is so soulless. lead singer can sing but i think he's still stuck in 1987. they did a couple of okay covers though. also the songwriting was pretty terrible.

OK I don't think you know what cock-rock is. Name me one Daughtry song anywhere near that epic, with vocals anywhere near as accomplished. I get it if you just don't like them, but right now you're just coming across as ignorant.

See on the one hand you have people like yourself saying they are cock-rock, and then on the other hand you have people saying they sound just like Creed, which makes me laugh because anyone with even the vaguest knowledge of rock music would be able to tell you Creed aren't a cock-rock band - a shit band, obviously, but stylistically they have little in common with bands like Motley Crue or Poison. So which are they? The reality is they (Alter Bridge) are just a straight up hard rock band with a vocalist who can really sing. They're not reinventing the wheel or anything, but they are not without talent.

For anyone interested, here's a song from Myles Kennedy's old band, Mayfield Four:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIXRjw1Oye0

Pretty much channeling his inner Jeff Buckley, just wait for the vocals from the 4:50 minute onwards

we're really gonna debate cock rock vs. shit rock? lets just agree that cock rock is music that appeals to cocks and shit rock is shitty music that appeals to cocks (no offense to anyone here)

and for the sake of clarifying my review this music is shit/cock rock... I came in neutral, with an open mind... there is some merit to the technical quality of the voice and the guitar... collectively however it is formulaic, boring, pseudo-metal

lets not split hairs or throw around vague insults like "ignorant"

to each his own... i just wasn't going to stay quiet after REALLY hating what I heard... you may resume fan discussion 8-)

Ok, you say cock rock appeals to cocks and shitty music appeals to cocks, and you are calling Alter Bridge both of those, so you are essentially calling me and anyone else who listens to them a cock? And that's not ignorant? It's not a vague insult, you're tarring people with the same brush, based on your narrow perceptions. I listen to loads of different types of music, some mainstream, some not. I totally get that Alter Bridge aren't reinventing the wheel, but then nor do bands like Foo Fighters, Green Day, Audioslave, Stone Temple Pilots amongst others. It's all just catchy rock music to me.

I know people give Alterbridge shit because of Creed, but Alterbridge was a heavier sound.

Both albums really have the heavy sound, and I don't really favor one over the other.

Blackbird kinda sounds country at times though. like "watch over you"

"Blackbird" is such a sad song, but has a really cool twangy guitar melody to it, really showcases Myle's vocal ability too, I think.

Blackbird- the album has more slower numbers but also has crunchy heavy riffs.

Listen to previews on Itunes and Amazon and see which you prefer.

  • Alter Bridge is nothing like Creed. Myles Kennedy farts more musical talent each morning than stapp could evvvvver have. Alter Bridge is a great band and Kennedy is extremely talented. The dude can wail.
He's currently singing for slash and touring with him. Both AB records are pretty good and the new one coming out is supposed to be heavier. The song blackbird is amazing.

I knew nothing about this band either. My friend is a fan, although she has been never been a reliable source for decent music. She had a poster of Poison on her wall in the 80's :wtf:
She was playing them when I visited recently, but I didn't know who it was.I was tortured listening to them and asked her if she could change the cd ... she was so offended declaring but its Alter Bridge ... ah that will explain the intense aural pain I am experiencing then!
