From wiki... the first place I should have looked

Tenth studio album, new guitarist and recent activity (2009–present)

The Red Hot Chili Peppers ended their two year hiatus in October 2009 and entered the studio to begin working on their tenth album. Speaking to Clash magazine in October 2009, Smith said that the album could be finished "Some time next year, maybe this time [next year]."[63]

The band made their live comeback on January 29, 2010, paying tribute to Neil Young with a cover of "A Man Needs a Maid" at MusiCares. Josh Klinghoffer, who substituted as a second guitarist for the band on their Stadium Arcadium tour, filled in on guitar for the MusiCares performance as well. On February 8, 2010, Klinghoffer was confirmed by Chad Smith as a full-time replacement for Frusciante.[64]

On May 6, 2010, Chad Smith said that the band had around twenty songs written and he expected that recording on the next album would commence in July 2010. Rick Rubin will once again return as producer. Smith commented on their new sound, explaining that Klinghoffer would also sing and play keyboards for the band. Smith also mentioned that as a result of having studied music theory at USC, Flea would incorporate a lot of piano-driven melodies.[65]

In May 2010, it was rumored that Activision is gathering data on whether or not to produce a Red Hot Chili Peppers themed version of the video game franchise Guitar Hero. The game would incorporate unlockable interviews, retrospectives and concert footage. The game would feature songs from the band's entire back catalog, as well as new material from their upcoming tenth album.[66]

On June 23, 2010, Chad Smith confirmed that the band's tenth album would be released in 2011 for which they currently have 4 completed songs. Smith joked that while some of the songs will feature pianos, the album will not sound like an Elton John album saying that he only wished the band could write songs as well as Elton John does.[67]

  • I lost all interest in this band after One Hot Minute. Not saying they haven't produced anything noteworthy, but just seemed to totally dilute their music and attitude. Very jaded IMO.

I find this a little odd (no offense of course, opinions are opinions) because I feel that One Hot Minute sounds the least "RHCP-ish" of their records, mostly due to Dave Navarro's presence on guitar. They went a bit of a softer, sunnier route on Californication and By the Way, but i feel like the songwriting present on those two records is the most effective of their career. In terms of Stadium Arcadium, I can understand how one would think they "diluted" their sound, but if you condense it into a short, concise, one disc album it's pretty good.

John Frusciante is a genius on guitar, and he'll be missed. It will be interesting to see how the band progresses musically without him.
  • Thanks for posting this! I love RHCP....anything from Californication on is nothing short of great! (but that's just my opinion!)

I really have liked much from them since Blood Sugar Sex Magic. However I really got into Snow (Hey Oh) when I played it in Rock band and now I love that song.

RHCP is one of my favorite bands, I'm not a fan of their work previous to Blood sugar, there's a couple of good tunes in one hot minute, but californication, by the way and stadium arcadium are awesome IMHO.John Frusciante is nothing less than a musical genious, I would be very disappoint if they make another "one hot minute", but without Frusciante anything could happen :|

I thought I read that he wanted to focus more on his solo stuff and just really didn't want to be part of a band anymore. I'm not sure what they are gonna do considering John wrote alot of their music.

Holy shit that stuff is horrible. It's just so fucking boring. Whether he's doin the quiet acoustic stuff(what the fuck is Your Pussies Glues To a Building on Fire), or that last album he came out with, The Em-BORE-ium. Now that was just musical nonsense. They weren't even fucking songs. Usually I can appreciate something even if I'm not into it, but I haven't found any redeeming qualities in Froosh's solo work.

He and Anthony do have shitty voices, but when they blend them together, along with Flea's it's totally classic sounding.

I always read that RHCP was his outlet for popular music, so maybe he'll find a kickass band to rock out with.

Hey, I'm right with you. The first time I sampled some stuff I literally thought I'd downloaded the wrong thing, b/c alot of people rave about it.
  • agree 100% on all counts. I went, however, to see them on the SA tour as that's the only opportunity I've had to see them. I wasn't blown away. I know I would have been 10 or so years ago.

I've pretty much liked all their albums, so I'm excited about this. I never understood all the negativity around Stadium Arcadium, I thought that was great. I'm not so sure about them doing more piano based songs, but I'll give it a chance.

So, now that John is out, do you think they'll bust out some "One Hot Minute" songs on their next tour? I hope so. I heard the reason why they never played them is because John hated all the songs, but now that he's gone, maybe they'll bring them back.

True, very true. It's kinda funny how they are able to pull this off. I am always amazed by how bad each guy is individually, then how amazing they can sound all together. weird.

I'll be excited for the Chili Peppers album whenever it comes out. It's been 5 years come 2011, so they are more than due.

I'm a fan of all eras RHCP, and think that Stadium Arcadium stands as one of their best albums. Sure it is long, but I thought nearly everything had its place there. It also seemed a bit better at featuring Flea's bass than say Californication or By the Way, which both seemed a little too midtempo for a band that's famous for melding funk and punk. Still think Blood Sugar Sex Magik is in the top 5 albums of the 90s and one of my alltime favorites.

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for RHCP, and will listen to any new work with an open mind. Found Stadium Arcadium a little dull but BSSM is still my all time favorite album of theirs. They are a band that is truly larger than the sum of its parts. Maybe without Frusciante they'll get back to being a little more funky. Not that Frusciante isn't talented. He was a great part of RHCP and will be missed, but it will be interesting to see how this goes.

i've seen them once. from what i hear they aren't a good live band. they weren't when i saw them. which sucks because i do like them a lot but if you don't sound good live....i'll like you a lot less.

Hey, no offence taken. You're dead right, all are opinions. BSSM was a lot better than One hot Min, but Uplift Mofo Party Plan was equally better than BSSM. I guess they really had a niche in terms of their sound back in the day, and now, for me at least, have become unremarkable and largely irrelevant

I doff my cap to Flea though, not least for his potrayal of Douglas J Needles in Back to The Future ii and iii. Even better than him playing the Nihilist in Big Lebowski

I saw them in 2000 and thought it was a great show. They have a ton of energy and the sad part of Frusciante leaving is that he channelled their energy and focused it well live.

I've seem them 2 times, and both times were good concerts, but of course they don't reach pearl jam goodness, but they have their own vibe live and i like it :)

    (english not my 1st language)

I've been a heuge fan of RHCP all my life... I was 13 years old when I started to listen to music... Of course, Black album, Nevermind and after, Ten and Vs became part of my life as I couldnt even know what tape was what cause they were used too muchg and paint was all gone.

Still, one of the favorite was BSSM. This sound was totally new, something way different. As I started to listen to funk, like Fukadelic, Sir Joe Quatterman, Sly and the familly Stone and other stuff like Stevie Wonder, ... I started to appreciate earlier stuff of RHCP. I beleive, as it was said, that Freaky Styley is one of the best RHCP albums as way also Mothers Milk. Songs like Sexy Mexican Maid, Knock me Down are classics to me. I also think that knowing what they've been thru also helps to understand their music.

To me, One Hot Minute is not less RHCP sound then the other ones, its just more rock, more dark, it was an album where you could feel the emptyness, the hope, ... Anthony a relapse, Flea on medication, and a "darker" guitarist made this album to sound, in my opinion, like a darker celebration of fun, love and friendship... "Love and music could save us, and it did..."

Of course, there was the return of John on Californiacation... No doubt about the fact that this is one of the best CDs of all time.

By the way, to me, is the one that sounds the less like RHCP. Maybe they got too mature, maybe its because John took to much place. It feels to quiet. Still it is a great album. Songs like venice queen, Cant stop, are incredible.

To me stadium sounds like the 21st century RHCP, a new kind of musical funk thate suits the ear. Songs like The death of a Martian and we beleive are maybe just too complicated to understand on a 1st time. Still, they are worth to listen on repeat until you get it. THEY ARE WONDERFULL!!! What was said before I beleive, ... if only 18 songs were realeased, it would've been great... Songs like we make you feel better and We beleive could've been scratched.

I guess one of the things I would've liked is that if they followed the path they opened with songs like Saving the population, Fortune Faded, Eskimo, Bunker Hill and other songs you can ear on the live CD between By The Way and Stadium Arcadium. Thats kind of a regret for me that they decided to close that door.

To finish, I guess Im a little scared about the new CD. Knowing that they know that guitarist since the Californiacation tour feels good though.

(to those who dont appreciate John Solo projects, listen closer... all his CDs are really different. Listen to Anne, Hope, Inside a break, The Wold's Eadge, ... Yes some of his work his crap, especially between BSSM and Californiacation (he was soooo ficked up anyway, look 4 interviews of him at that time on youtube) but some of his work is beautifull)
