Police say they are appalled at the actions of a 37-year-old man who was arrested for speeding with three unsecured babies in the car.

Police pulled over the driver on Larapinta Drive, about 65 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs, after he was caught driving an unroadworthy car at 144 kilometres per hour.

Three babies, aged between one and three months, were being held unrestrained on the laps of passengers.

Police say each of the four wheels were secured by only two wheel nuts.
The man will face charges relating to speeding and driving with unrestrained children.

It wasn't all that long ago that babies sat in the front seat unrestrained. Right in front of the dashboard. Before safety glass. When it was bad to go through the windshield, but even worse to bounce back through the broken glass. Yikes.

nah, we never had car seats...or seat belts when we were really young, we laid across the back seat, we weren't allowed to jump around or sit in the front seat tho.....my dad was an ambulance driver and thus he had seen too much to allow it.

these days we'd probably be arrested as parents with our kids riding around we did!

course we also rode around in a probably 6 ton "Pony Ack" as my dad called it that probably could have survived a wreck with a 747! Problem was, so did everyone else ..heheheeeeee

I would be scared to death these days to ride w/my grand-kids w/o their seat-belts....see, conditioning does that to you...plus the fact that i spent quite a time working in the emergency dept of our local hospital....that cured me of not wearing a seat-belt.

but as usual, i digress..and on and on and on
