Why not reissue Temple Of The Dog?

I was listening to Temple of the Dog's album the other day after being inspired to do so from listening to Soundgarden's latest 'Black Rain.' In my opinion, the TOTD album is one of the greatest rock albums ever released; a bold statement I know, but that's how I feel--the album really is as close to perfection as it gets for me in the blues rock realm.

That being said, with the new and very slow-moving SG reunion and PJ's 20th anniversary approaching this coming year, why no love/attention to TOTD? PJ has re-released Ten (and supposedly they'll be re-releasing their other albums at some point, I guess?), and Soundgarden has yet another "greatest hits" compilation coming out next month. I don't see how or why TOTD is kind of lost in the mix. Hunger Strike was arguably one of the most popular and widely recognized "grunge" (sorry to use that word, but it's appropriate here) songs of the 1990s.

TOTD's album was released in April 1991...I think it would be highly appropriate and just down right fucking awesome to do a proper reissue and VERY careful remaster of their classic self-titled album in April of 2011 for its 20th anniversary. 2011 looks to be another big year for 90s bands. The real question is, why would they (the bands/management/label) NOT want to do this? Hell, I'd be down for a Mad Season reissue too with all the AIC hype over the past year (Above was released in 1995 if I'm not mistaken, and yes also a phenomenal album).

Thoughts from fellow TOTD fans?

  • Shit, I forgot something in my original post. If they were to reissue TOTD, they should include higher quality versions of 'Angel On Fire' and 'Black Cat.' Angel On Fire in particular is a true gem and widely unknown to fans, from what I've noticed. Even though it's a demo, it's probably one of my favorite TOTD songs...

Here it is (although labeled as an SG b-side, which is incorrect):

    Love that record!
  • I think a reissue would be great, but I'm not sure how likely it is though. The band would want to be careful that it was not deemed to be a cashing in on Andrew Wood's memory, although it would be very cool to hear the outtakes from the session.

Mad Season on the other hand, I would love them to release the Live at the Moore show on dvd/blu ray.

Remember the last few Rumor Pit new's over @ Synergy? A Mad Season Live @ the Moore DVD was rumored to be coming out & a Pearl Jam '05 Canadian compilation CD was in the works. Nothing was ever released for these 2. :(

yah... they would have to tread softly with TOTD because of the memory of landrew... maybe if they dedicated some/all of the proceeds to some sort of addiction program it'd be a nice gesture

i would love to see this album get the respect it deserves though

almost as much as i'd love to see the leftover mad season tracks finished with lanegan on vocals :)

It's a delicate one, but it definately deserves the respect.

I would love to hear the second Mad Season album finished, or even just the instrumentals.

Great point; it would be a pretty sensitive issue. If it were to happen, they should donate part of the sales to a fitting cause (in memory of Andrew). Same could go for a Mad Season reissue. I still say it's worth the stretch; TOTD is too good an album to not honor. Mad Season, too

Also, nice call on a Live at the Moore DVD; classic performance. Seeing Layne and Mark together on Long Gone Day gives me chills every time.

I'm all for a reissue, but I kinda think they do it more justice by just leaving as a little time capsuled secret.

I don't see how they would be cashing in on Andrew Wood. A)Very few people, even ones that bought the album, really know who he is and B)He was a muse for the album and had zero to do with the actual creation of the music.

You are absolutely right with this. The writing and recording process for this album was so quick that there was little time to overdub or drastically change ideas and as a result the album has the same spontaneous and organic feel as Ten and Mad Season do. Mike McCready said of Mad Season and TOTD in an old interview that they were among the best recording sessions he'd ever been involved in. Apparently the long solo at the end of Reach Down was never intended to be that long but they left the tapes rolling while he soloed on! I don't know if I'm the only one who has thought this but I always hoped after the death of Layne Stayley that Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains would gather a few members of the Seattle community and do a Mad Season/TOTD type album in his memory. Mad Dog! I think the original idea of paying tribute to Andrew Wood resulted in one of the top 5 albums of the early 90's and a properly packaged reissue would be pretty appropriate now given the current interest in PJ and Soundgarden and give another chance to expose the charisma and voice of Andrew Wood to the newest generation of grunge fans.

a reissue would seem like a cashcow idea and sorta take away from the album

I think the best idea would be a reissue as a double CD with the best of Mother Love Bone. That would be a good way to remember Andy and please the fans.
Still can't believe I met Mike Mccready at the Guggenheim and got a pic with him!!!!!

    Not really at all.
  • It seems very difficult these days for any band (or collaboration) to re-release an album and not have it branded as a "cash grab." The reason being that SO many bands do reissue albums for that very reason...to cash in.

I wouldn't see that as the case with this album. Like we've already noted the album proceeds could go to a fitting cause and/or foundation. Many may still disagree. The idea just kind of sprouted after I realized the other day that the album is close to 20 years old...yet the music itself is timeless. Seriously, I never get tired of listening to it. I never saw the re-issue of Ten as a cash grab...granted it also wasn't made in tribute to a fallen band member/friend. Even still, I still contend that the album deserves recognition today by more than just us hardcore fans. Although I can relate to enjoying a "secret capsule" in time, or in other words a more hidden gem. Nice posts/thoughts everyone.

QFT!! Nice post, man. Agree with every word! And yeah the solo on Reach Down is still one of my all time favs...much like Cornell's vocals on Say Hello 2 Heaven and Four Walled World. I've been addicted to my shitty quality copy of Angel On Fire lately. Usually I have a difficult time listening to poor quality recordings/demos, but this song is so great that the quality of the recording doesn't seem to phase me. However, I wouldn't be opposed to hearing something a little more "finished."
