i give you a pass cause i know youve been exposed to some most excellent ozrock.
however...
... i wonder if those who have an aversion to a particular band who have attained a certain level of fandom, or commercial praise, arent overinfluenced by the amount of overzealous press said band gets. im not really one for actually listening to reviews and 'expert' opinions on bands of the moment so sometimes i tend not to understand the backlash some band get.
im not a huge fan of arcade fire and tbh only bought neon bible last year cause it was in the bargain bin and a friend is a big fan... so i figured its now or never. when i heard month of may a few months ago i thought wow thats arcade fire? so i resolved to give the new album a chance. and i like it. i dont love it but im prepared to give it a few more spins and see what happens.

I totally agree, the way some people talk about Arcade Fire you would think it was the second coming of Nickelback or something!

I'm not a fan of this really boring standard 'indie' rock wave that has come through like my morning jacket, arcade fire, and a bunch of other bands. It does nothing, yeah it can create a nice atmopshere for a song or two but meh.

the first time i saw MMJ was a few years ago in small club in sydney when they were nobodys darlings. and i thought they were great. since then theyve blown up into some indie god band and admittedly im not too comfortable with that and so ive not been paying as much attention to them as i used to. i tend to fall off the band wagon when it goes rolling by.
and yeah youre right they(indie bands) do create a nice atmosphere but like any genre there can be an overload and then a dismissal of all bands of that genre. i guess i tend to stick with a couple of bands cause they provide my fill and sometimes it seems once one band is 'discovered' then every similiar band needs to be accorded the same exposure cause the suits see a good thing and they get blinded by dollar signs. anyhoo... im not sure what it is im trying to really here... just that more often than not iis best to come to a band on your own terms.

...a band I'm frankly sick and tired of hearing about. I did listen to a few songs off The Suburbs and couldn't get into them. Then I saw them perform on The Daily Show last week and that confirmed that I really didn't care for them. Their music doesn't seem to be that complex that they need two drummers, two piano/keyboard players and two violin players. It seemed a little pretentious.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
Butthead: Huh huh.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V
If you're going to bash them, at least be accurate.
How can they be phony? they're not preaching anything and as far as being indie goes, they're on an indie label which about all it takes to meet that requirement these days.
egotistical could be something that carries an argument though. And if you think that, welcome to the music biz.

MMJ is about as far from indie rock as it gets. They're a borderline jam band.
Arcade Fire is completely overhyped. Wake Up is cool. Keep The Car Runnin is decent, but didn't the Boss already write that one? Alotta stuff that sounds the same, and then stuff that sounds worse b/c the chick sings.
At least one song is among the worst stuff ever recorded...My Body Is A Cage...now that's puke inducing.
I get that it's hip to like them, but they're far from the being anything remotely resembling a great rock band.
Mostly pretty boring with a few highlights, if you ask me, but if that's your thing whatever. Just don't preach to me that they're the biggest band in the world, b/c they're simply not.
If that doesn't make them "resemble a great rock band" then I don't know what does.
I get the backlash, though. They write very "big" songs designed to be played in an arena setting. A lot of people just recoil as soon as they hear anything resembling U2, but I do not for one second think these guys are insincere. Their music seems to mean a lot to them and their fans.
worthless thread. not only does he bash an amazing band but he does not back it up with anything of substance. can't see the point of even making this thread.
I've never understood the praise this band gets. I've tried to listen but I don't ever find anything worth coming back for. To me it's become the standard sound for indie rock.

I had never heard them before this morning (save for some classical show where I saw parts of the band perform classical pieces with members of The National and the Brooklyn Philharmonic), but given all the chatter I decided to grab a couple of the more talked about albums and give it a go. I am starting with Funeral, and I have to say it's pretty masterfully written. I have some of the same reservations as others when it comes to "indie" rock (overhyped, mostly moody drivel by self righteous hipsters producing lots of music that could have promise if they believed in a song building somewhere and not just the endless repeat of the same rhythym for 3:30 then on to the next song that is a very slight variation on the same theme). In any event, I still try to listen without any preconceived notions of whether I will like a band or not. This fortunately landed me a few bands I consider staples of my CD/record collection I would have otherwise rejected without even listening to them, mostly TV on the Radio.
In any event, so far so good with Arcade Fire. They are definitely worth checking out if you haven't, as I am doing that right now and I am pretty impressed.

From what I've heard this is about right on the money for what Arcade Fire is.
i think they have some good songs but funeral and neon bible are not great albums in my opinion. some stuff off the suburbs is good buta again, not all of it i can get into. Saw their daily show performance and was underwhelmed. I'm sorry but i get the feeling like they're really pretentious..maybe it's Win Butler or the double drummers on some stuff...i get the orgy of sound and it's cool but the boss did it right on all of his songs when he had the e street backin him up and these musicians fall short for all the praise they're getting. They do not deserve all the hype that they get imo. What happened to songs with guitar solos...doesn't have to be even flow but it'd be nice to hear a lead guitarist in this band.

Go see them live....great communal spirit on stage.
