worst filler songs

For most of the albums in my music library, I have the full album unless there's just one or two songs I consistently skip. In those instances I'll go ahead and leave them off. Some albums are just full of filler songs and others have one or two. What do you think are the worst filler songs out there? Two come to mind immediately for me. I think I've actually listened to both of these songs exactly one time all the way through.

PJ - Stupid Mop (I'm not sure what they were thinking with this one)
Tool - Disgustipated from Undertow (15 minutes of crickets chirping just doesn't do it for me)

  • I'm not sure i'd agree with Stupid Mop. Musically there are elements of that track i like. Bugs is more of a pain. But you have to remember, the band were going out of their way to lose their popular following at that stage. One of the main reasons why No Code sold as little as it did.

yeah, but there's nothing like Stupid Mop on No Code. Stupid Mop is sick man. A child saying they want to be spanked? Sorry, but that's where you lose me. I don't believe this was some sabotage strategy for No Code because that record has gained more popularity well after it's release.

Call me crazy, but I like Bugs :-)! Yes it is filler, but one I actually like.

I see 'Stupid Mop' just like The Beatles' 'Revolution 9'...avant garde music.

I think the point of "Stupid Mop" was to show how trivial the band thought it was that other people wanted them to have this certain level of fame (e.g. U2, R.E.M., The Who) but since fame was not Pearl Jam's motivation to begin with, they were happy to take the "punishment" of not being famous. Ironically they are one of the last true rock bands to make it big. Also, the eerie last line of that track "Do you think you would ever kill yourself?" "Yes I think I would." is definitely towards Kurt Cobain. How could it not? But it also was empathy towards him, and themselves because if they followed the road to "bigger is better" it would kill them. Maybe not in the physical sense as it did with Cobain, but as artists they would be dead and trapped into making stuff they did not find any inspiration in.

Ultimately, it is up to the individual artist to determine what they consider "success" to be. For some bands, success is selling 10 million records. For some, it's just filling the local club which holds 1000 people. "Stupid Mop" is a testament to those artists that are truly in it for the creation of something different, and something that makes a statement. If you keep doing the same thing, it works in the short term, but the backlash is bigger. If you keep evolving and changing your art, it keeps people interested, even if they don't buy it all the time.
