NYC Trip Next Year...Help

edited September 2010 in All Encompassing Trip
Peeps...I'm planning a trip to the NYC area next year. I am loyal to Hilton hotels and found one in Newark, NJ at Penn Station. I read it as a 15-20 minute Amtrak ride to Manhattan. My questions are: Is this area safe to stay (just plan on sleeping there, not seeing sites in Newark) are there any other Hilton brands that anyone has stayed in that is convienient for public transit to NYC sites and sounds??? many thanks...

Not sure if there are Hilton brands in Long Island City, but that is where I always stay. It is 1 or two stops from Grand Central and a lot cheaper. Several new hotels are being built so there may be a Hilton by then, if there isn't one now. Lots of good locals in that neighborhood too. Have a great trip!

And the bed bugs, just don't go to the movies. Gross.

Unfortunately theres nowhere to check that I know of with the bedbugs.
There is an outbreak now in not only movie theatres but also hotels, shopping/department stores,
    fucking gross and disgusting !

Anyhow be sure to check the other boros as well.
I know there are a few new digs in downtown Brooklyn ,
    Possibly on Long Island ,
no offense to newark but cmon there has to be a fw others.

also , check the new york for dummies thread, its a valuable resource.

  • If you're loyal to Hilton's, the one in Newark NJ is pretty conveniently located. Newark isn't a great place, but if you're flying into that airport then staying there will work for you pretty well. Newark Penn Station is pretty easy to navigate, and through there you can take NJ Transit (light rail/commuter train) or The PATH (a little more subway-esque) right into Manhattan. If you're driving to Newark, be careful - it is (or at least used to be) the car theft capital of the country so find yourself a secure garage but keep in mind that won't be cheap either.

Also, there are I believe three Hilton's in Manhattan. I wouldn't reccomend any of them, but that's just because it's NYC and you've got so many other options. It's like going to the Olive Garden in Times Square instead of one of the 200 other excellent Italian restaurants in the city - why anyone ever does that is beyond me, but I guess some people really stick to what they know/like, and to each their own I suppose...

addendum: the Hilton Midtown (W 54th & 6th Ave) is actually quite nice, and situated just above Times Square and just below Central Park. Lots of subways nearby, too. I imagine it isn't the cheapest of options but it would be worth at least looking into if you're adamant on remaining brand loyal.
