I've never seen why this is a big deal.

When I first heard about it, I immediately asked how far away is OK for the mosque. Nobody can give a good answer to that one.

It's 3 blocks if you go 3 blocks in any direction from Ground Zero I think you'd find plenty of things that do no uphold the sanctity of that spot - peep shows, bars, etc.

People just need to quit worrying about what everyone else is doing...Don't like that a mosque or cultural center or titty bar is being built where you don't think it should, buy the fucking land and build your own tower of babel...

god dammit, why does everyone want to control what everyone else does? don't like it, too fucking bad, that is the "price" of freedom; people can do things that you may not like...quit going with this honor and sacred bullshit...It happened, it was/is horribly sad, I cannot even look at those towers falling without tearing up and thinking about all the terrified people inside and what they must have been going through, in fact, I won't watch it anymore for that reason...But it wasn't ISLAM that attacked the towers, it was Nut bags...

and good luck controlling what nut bags do...if you think you can, I have a rock I would like to sell you that keeps terrorism away.

It's actually racist to characterize as racist someone who has issues with the mosque (or whatever it's supposed to be). The statement presumes a race when considering Islam. If you're going to cast aspersions, at least get your semantics straight.

Additionally, the "titty bars are nearby" argument is entirely irrelevant, irrespective of one's moral stance on naked dancing. Silicon and poles did not bring down the towers, extremists representing an ideology did.

So again I'll ask. How close is acceptable for a mosque.

Plus - the terrorists were all men so perhaps we should close down the gentleman's club as well.

I am enjoying basking in the irrelevance of your comment. Or perhaps you were just going for a cheap zing? Anyhow.

If you'd do me the favor of actually reading my very short post, you'd see that it made no statement for or against the mosque. Rather, my post was merely countering the tired-out and meaningless arguments of some folks in this thread.

If you must know, I'm torn on the subject. Personally, I can't help but find it preposterous that we should accept this new building as some sort of "outreach" or symbol of "tolerance". However, philosophically, legally, Constitutionally, in the spirit of what I think America is, I have a very hard time justifying its prevention.

I don't think it's overly irrelevant. To say that because the terrorists were muslim that we shouldn't allow a mosque 3 blocks away is just being ridiculous.

So there - I guess I agree with you. There isn't a very good argument for not allowing it.

if you watched the daily show clip several states are protesting a mosque or cultural center being built, even in California and I think it was Tennessee.

actually it's not. a lot of catholic priests seem to like to fuck little kids and yet no one is protesting a new catholic church being built. my point is you say islamic extremists took down the towers, fine, so you really think EVERYONE of that faith should be punished and treated like terrorists? don't you see how ridiculous that is!? how many innocent people did the inquisitions and witch trials kill? maybe we should boycott all religious centers instead of just one particular one?

Eh, i thought with the election of Obama, racism was over in America. no only reason i would have a problem with a mosque being built is if the government was paying for it. is that what is happenning in cali?

    ha, it made me laugh!
it's not irrelevant at all... its a great point actually.

al qaeda doesn't represent the muslim faith in entirety... that's like saying sodomizing priests represent catholicism.

why don't you just accept it for what it is then.

it's not a mosque and it's not at ground zero. it's a community centre.

The Cordoba Center will be about the same size as the YMCA's, 92ndY in Tribeca, and the JCC (Jewish Community Center). It is being modeled after the 92ndY (YMHA) which has Jewish events. The "Y" has never been called a Synagogue nor has The YMCA ever been called a Church. The building will have a pool, theater, culinary center and other features.

there's even a clip of a news channel giving the date/time for a koran burning event

according to an fbi report from somewhere in the 90's-2005 there were more cases of terrorism against the us from jewish extremists than muslims ones, yet i don't see people protesting jcc's or synagogue's

So should we punish everyone do to the actions of extremists? Isnt that what they want? They are loving the attention that is being given to this mosque. Im sure they are using it as a great recruiting tool. Keep adding to the fire.

Well said. i a very sore subject for many Americans, and it should be. This guy who wants to build it is a shady dude. Where are the funds gonna come from that he has to raise to build it? Anyone who supports this thing is fucking high. Makes me fucking sick.

I rather enjoy how so many Americans try and say ground zero is such hollowed ground and we owe it to victims and families and our national pride or some other misguided rhetoric. Everyone loves the nation and is such a wonderful patriot, except when it comes to being a good participatory citizen and doesn't enable foreign wars, corporations which undermine ourselves, and little other things like providing soldiers with necessary equipment or even basic necessities for fellow citizens. But yes, let's immortalize a spot of land which will be manipulated for economic and political gain and ignore the real meaning of the attack or our response to it. It really means so much people... the next time we can’t scream innocence and ignorance; for the next time it will be on us.

I agree with the view (proposed by some Muslims, as well as others) that an interfaith chapel be built there, open to members of all faiths. These individuals are arguing that this would be more sensitive and would be a way to avoid riling up people, while at the same time permitting Muslims to pray nearby, which is indeed important from freedom of worship and tolerance perspectives.
