Not safer per se but in terms of using CCTV for "increased safety" I think it often lends to the illusion of increased safety which ultimately will accomplish the goals of those who put up the cameras. Follow?

And I didn't watch the video- sorry, just answering the question.

kind of like a panopticon type of thing where theres a sense of invisible omniscience?? who knows whos watching or even if theyre watching... the presence of the cameras changes behaviour??

It has been proven to make areas safer, scumbags operate in the shadows.

Good point, I still think it helps though. I saw this article on the news in England where they went to this housing estate and interviewed some little old ladies after cctv had been installed. They were so happy almost to the point of tears. Comments were like, we can go outside now.

that doesnt mean the little old ladies were safe... it just meant they felt safer. and when people feel safe they gain strength and they act differently and stop behaving like victims. so in that respect CCTV is a good thing for those who feel most vulnerable.

personally i feel no safer in areas where CCTV is installed as opposed to areas where there are none.

Don't you think if you were a criminal who was going to do something bad then saw a camera, you would change your plan.

yes i would change my plan, but still commit the crime. id change my approach and my appearance in order to avoid detention by CCTV. i imagine more crims than mountain climbers have balaclavas.

Not really, because when I go into town I don't see these strange people with grainy, blurred pixel-heads who always seem to be committing these crimes. They must do all their pilfering when I'm indoors.
