What is the deal with this show? Why was it so long? What was the "experiment"?

I've had the boot for a few years now and a couple of days ago realized how incredibly long it is and was wondering what was so special about this show.

The advice we give to you is the advice we give to ourselves.. Let's PACE ourselves.. Its gonna be a long one!" EV speaks at the start of pre-set for 7/11/03 Mansfield final date of the EXPERIMENT.

At 45 songs, in both number of songs and length of the show, this is the longest Pearl Jam show ever. Total count for the three nights of the EXPERIMENT at Mansfield = 82 songs plus 11 covers.

Such a great night. I was not at the first two nights but flew up for Newark through Hershey park so this was on my schedule. Scored 7th row stones side through ticketmaster. My dad was 62 at the time and this was his first and only PJ show.

Epic indeed! I bought the boot a few years back because it was the longest in the store. Must have been amazing for anyone who attended all 3 shows.

I find it hilarious they had to play Ledbetter twice during those 3 shows. After a 3+ hour show that was the only way people would go home. I guess you can't end a show with One Note.

We got there well before the acoustic show started, I'm still amazed that it was like 1/3 full at the start of the acoustic set and 1/2 - 2/3 full by the end. I had 7th row in Section 3 and went over and sat 4th row center for most of it and it was completely empty. WBCN announced it a few days before, but it seems a ton of people were late. Sucks for them. I love the pre-set but I really have listened to the "main sets" only a few times. Seems rushed and sloppy. The acoustic set is amazing though.

Was it Pearl Jam's or The White Stripes's "One Note" song?

Actually they said they were going to play every song they had played on that 2003 tour over 3 nights. It was in Philly they tried to play every song they had ever recorded.

Philly 4 and State College were longer. How much time must pass between PJ sets for you to not count it? If they played past midnight in the same venue the nigt before, would you count it? If they played a show the same day starting at noon would you count it? The Mansfield show was 2 shows for the price of one.

For the record, I was at all 3 of these shows, so I'm not playing the "my show was the longest" game.

Mansfield 3 is 3:27:16 with 49 tracks
Spectrum 4 is 3:21:36 with 43 tracks

I don't have the state college boot, so don't know how long that one is.

Mansfield '03
my first PJ shows...little did i know it was the start of something huge
the bf got me on the PJ wagon...we werent in the 10c yet
spent buttloads on the tix through e-bay
went to 7/2 & 7/3 - thought those were epic...they added 3rd night; talks about no repeats
then we heard of the special acoustic set that was to happen before the opening band
could not pass up night 3
spent even more buttloads on the tix through e-bay for night 3
thanks to a cool boss (we both worked at same place/same hours) we both got the night off on a days notice
for me, the acoustic set made the 3rd night...no one was there yet..hardly anyone knew what was going on...got a seat nice and close - sat down for the experiment and let PJ do the rest
havent been able to kick the PJ habit since

That was amazing... honestly the end of that tour was unreal... the Boston Philly and MSG shows... what a stretch!!

Plus i mean the rumor was... there is a strict 11pm venue there ( thats a fact) so in between shows 2 and 3 there... which were 8 days apart... the band put 2 free lawn seats in each mailbox of a trailer park that is behind the venue lawn... and they played untill 1145... ed comes out for 2nd encore and says its probably the last time they will be able to play there... haha it was amazing... what A night...

My college grad gift was going to the 3 Bostons Philly and MSG greatest week of my life... and those shows were just un real...

Its amazing... i say this all the time but after seeing 30 PJ shows ( which i know is nothing compared to some) and having approx 400 on disc or DVD>.. they still fucking surprise me Setlist wise... I Just dont even know how its possible... example--- AInt talkin bout Love in Hartford!?!?!?! and I was shocked by new LUKIN at MSG 2 and even Hunger Strike there really surprised...

Anyway.. best live band in the world right now... l

Ugh.. now gather round kiddies and you will hear the story..
about the old days... The story gets all twisted around as time goes by..
the goal was play play all the songs they "worked up" for the 2003 tour :
Ed 7/2/03 (after "Dissident")
"... we've worked up about 70 songs for this tour. We thought we would play three nights without repeating a song and get to every song ... we're actually playing about 105 ... this would put it at about 35 songs a night."
Well I don't believe they to got EVERY song... but the total count for the three nights at Mansfield = 82 songs plus 11 covers.) 1 repeat (Yellow Ledbetter) .. the one song not on the offficial 7/11/03 bootleg was "ARC".
Kept off out of respect for the rockslide festival victims whose memory it was meant to be a tribute to..
and yes 7/11/03 Is the longest PJ show to date:
At 46 songs, in both number of songs and length of the show, this is the longest Pearl Jam show ever, surpassing the previous longest, 5/3/03 – State College, Pennsylvania.
Trivia: despite the band filming all three shows (7/2/03;7/3/03 and 7/11/03) there are no bootleg video sources known for ANY of these shows!!!!

So I guess you are saying that the time between sets is irrelevant? I have a Gorge and Philly box set of boots. All played in the same venue with some amount of time seperating the sets. Do you count those as all one show?

This show was a late addition. We bought tickets for cheap from ticketmaster a day or two before the show, after they announced the special set. I've never heard of anyone having trouble getting tickets to the show.

I think it is a matter of 1 ticket equals 1 show. Doesn't matter if they played a set, rested for 2 hours and came back to play another set, if it was all for the price of one ticket.

I figured the "one ticket" argument was next, and almost addressed it in my last post. So if a band played every night of a 3 day festival, and you paid for one ticket for the entire festival, you only saw one show?

The longest show ever is and should be when they get on stage for one continuous show (with obvious short set breaks), for one chunk of time, with no band playing in between their sets. It's simple and logical, with no need to justify anything. You do not need criteria on # of tickets, length between sets, bands playing between sets, CDs included in a bootleg package, etc. that your argument introduces.

Do you count portions of a show if Eddie plays solo, like to start the second encore? Sure you do, we all do, and you counted bugs from Philly 4. So do you count any Eddie pre-set songs in the total show time? It's no different than the Mansfield pre-set, except Mansfield was included on the CD. I was also in Toronto for that legendary pre-set, do you count that?

If you look on page 1 of this thread, the difference between Philly 4 and Mansfield 3 is SIX minutes. All they had to do was get the opening band to start earlier.

Couldn't care less whether this was the longest show or not, but it does remain one of the most unique shows the band has ever played. Wish I could have been there!

The issue is you are unnecessarily complicating things. So how long must pass between PJ sets before it is not considered one show? What if a show goes beyond midnight, and they play the same venue the next day? Do you think other legends of Rock took a break during their longest show ever to let another band play? And most importantly, why is the Mansfield pre-set any different than any regular EV solo preset? Mansfield is simply a PJ show with an extended pre-set, just like Toronto 2009!

Mansfield was a full band acoustic set... a ed pre set is him solo for 2 or 3 songs... normally 1

Agreed that you are. No one wants a list of criteria that a show must meet to be considered the longest ever. We just want it to be simple and logical. PJ arrives on stage, plays uninterrupted by another band or extended set break, until early in the morning.
